watches to me. The 5960 is in oversupply at the moment and very easy to get. The 5170 is available in resale but very few if any ADs have them or think they can get one. Also, there seem to be no used 5170s out here for sale so final owners are keeping them. The 5170 wins to me. An all new in house movement with lots of great new features. Look up the the Patek press release on the watch for all the information.
I just got a new 5170j, unfortunately, it is factory sealed and I cannot bring myself , just yet, to open it, so I do not know how it feels or looks on the wrist.

Why don't you go for 5960R? From your collection I feel that you might prefer bigger watch.

I don;t think both pieces are tough to get from the AD or from collector's market...although that's what will tell you, but if you show interests they will find you one in 1 week or two.
Even 5070 is easily available. Hardly rare either.
Have a look at a certain European website - 29 X 5070s for sale as well. A quick chat with any watch dealer and you can have any of the metals within the same day, all at sensible prices. I stated before, people are fans of what they own and not objective...

its a really interesting and important watch- and I looks great in this configuration. The 5170, I think, would look better in a white metal. Im not crazy about the current look.

The price point on the 5170j is high and that affects demand, no doubt, even for a Patek.
