As concerns the authenticity of the piece, I suspect that it's not an issue. A photo from Fine Watch Bank (re-posted by Emmanuele) includes the Certificate of Origin, and 'noir index obus gris' is legible in the description of the dial. A counterfeit certificate seems unlikely in the situation, but I suppose a request to Patek for an extract from the archives would give the final verdict.
If it is genuine, I'm interested in how it came into existence, i.e. whether its definitely bespoke and therefore 1/1. The other (and in my opinion more interesting) situation would be a very limited production, like the blue dial 3490P. But I can't say I understand the circumstances under which such a run would occur, for this Patek or any other.
And yes, GLau, if I acquire this piece it will be my pleasure to write a review. I'm in the possible minority of those with a deep appreciation for the 5496p, and I'm also a sucker for black Pateks, so the 5496-016 does a lot for me.
