I think the steel (5935a) has the best refinement and legibility for this linerage of WT's
The day night ring has the appropriate contrast between the dial colour. If you look at the blue and LE variations, the black portion to indicate night gets lost in the dial radial hue
I also think the rework of the chrono register works better. I know a lot of people think this is disproportionately sized, (I can sort of see that, but I have to force myself to agree), I think the thickness of the sub dial register matches perfectly the day night track, I think therefore it is in balance.
The numbers on the dial are bigger, and therefore easier to read than previous versions, the mid points are marked by hashes and thicker markers. I think the sub dial design therefore works better.
I do think Patek made a mistake stamping these. I think it is a corner they did not need to cut. These are not highly popular watches and I dont believe made in great quantities, from a dial point of view, it perhaps would have justified some individual touches.

because of all the additional WT information taking up space. Otherwise, the subdial size appears consistent going back to the 5930.

I understand, but as AmisT pointed,
the dial is already filled with information, so a smaller chrono subdial makes sense (at least to me).
Also, I wonder how often the chrono function is used such that the readability makes a big difference.

I love the combo, but that tiny counter is virtually useless. The most readable I think is the steel due to better contrast, but here I’m not a fan of the salmon dial, too restrictive. Hard crowd to please )) Great write up mon ami!
The tiny chrono dial looks a bit too small to me...
...and if you are going to provide a clear back, why in hell would you print/engrave anything on it?
Not sure if it's only me but I find the dial of the steel version overall proportion a bit off.
I think the 39.5m versions look more balanced. The small subdial doesn't bother me as much since I've come to accept that it will not be used most of the time. But having it doesn't hurt either, although it is good from a functional standpoint.

The blue is most attractive to my eyes.. I like the blue city ring, then followed by the white chrono ring.. and I do think the 5935 looks abit off.. Like you, I am unsure if the tiny chrono min register will prevent me from enjoying the watch
