In my opinion it is a mammoth stretch to call a perpetual calendar "practical" (though I have made the argument to She Who Must Be Obeyed). For watches that have a date quickset feature, it takes all of 10 seconds to change a date. It takes as much energy as using the chronograph feature that you are raving about. I love perpetual calendars for what they accomplish mechanically, but their added practicality relative even to a Calatrava with date is completely out of proportion with the added cost.
