Patek 565 Steel & Breguet Numbers : Part 1

Jan 10, 2010,07:51 AM

I would like to share images of a new acquisition...a Patek 565 in Steel with Breguet numbers and radium markers. Reference 565 was launched in 1938 and was made in two series. The first series was available with caliber number 12'''120 and had subsidiary seconds. Starting in 1942, the second series housed caliber 12-27 SC and had centre seconds. The reference 565 was replaced in 1952 by ref.2533. My research of the Auction Catalogue notes indicates some 60 examples of this model are known to the market and of this some 20 are known to have been made in Steel with a dozen or so with Breguet numbers and an enen smaller small portion with Breguet numbers and radium/ luminous markers like this example. Even rarer is the combination of "chemin de fer" or railway track outer graduation and Breguet numeral...of these only some 4 are known to the market. Mine was producuced in 1943 with the 12" 120 Sc Movement (image in Part 2). An interesting feature is the last 4 digits of the case number engraved on the outer edge of the case (see image) This compliments the 2508 SS I acquired and the 3417 anti-Magnetic (given for a service ..ETA 11 months!) Back to the theme of interestingly shaped and cased vintage Pateks after this diversion. Thank you John L for the watch, johnngym and Julian for advise. Enjoy, Roni

This has to be my favorite basic Patek Philippe dial design. Congratulations on a perfect choice. -- Richard.

Roni, Thanks for the pictures. I like this watch. Especially Breguet index , sector minutes track and radium dots are one of the greatest combinations I have ever seen. John

very Elegant indeed. Great choice!

This is what I call the "Patek Philippe Observatoire Watch" like the A. Lange & Sohne Richard Lange watch is an "Observatoire Watch." A truly great piece in the very fitting and appropriate steel case. Very fitting in steel! A fantastic find!

Does it make sense...

Hi Roni, firstly  huge congrats - it is a very rare watch and dial / movement combo! Secondly I have a (maybe naive) question: Does it make sense to use "regular" hands on a dial with luminous (radium) dots? Should´nt there be luminous hands too?  Maybe a...

You're right...

Erich...the thought even occurred to me but I guess one would never know the answer as the Patek Extract do not specify the hands when the watch left the factory. Having said that i've seen one other 565 Steel with radium dots but ' regular" hands .... Wh...
