Patek Philippe

Part 2 - This time it’s all about the watches. A few weeks ago having only seen images of the three 50th anniversary Nautilus watches I initiated a thread

that included my initial impressions of the watches. I also expressed my surprise that the watches were part of the Watches and Wonders novelties and wondered why they did not have an exclusive release at a different time of the year, eg the Fall. Having had the opportunity to see and try on all the pieces I feel it’s an appropriate time to discuss what’s most important …. the watches.

While each is different from the other in significant ways, For me one word describes each of them.    Fabulous!

Seems like the watch that has garnered the most attention and desire is the 5610/1P 38mm in platinum. Not surprising. It lives up to its billing. In a vintage sized 38mm case and in the ultra rare for Nautilus platinum case, it has the heft, beauty and historical rarity (because of the metal and size) to set it apart. And like all three it has the strikingly  beautiful  sunburst blue dial

Then there is the standard 41 mm size 5810/1G. For me this is the perfect size for this watch. Like all three versions the thinness of the watch is startling and magnificent in person.

Seems like many feel the 3rd place finisher is the  strap version 5810G. For me this watch is the sleeper. Between the baguette diamond indices and matching blue strap it  is very different and very special. What makes it even more special is that there will  “only” be 1,000 pieces (vs a total of 4,000 of the bracelet versions). Apart from all that, the matching navy blue strap with white  stitch accentuates and magnifies the overall beauty of this blue dial and white gold case. While normally not a diamonds type person, I love the overall look and the way the baguettes make the dial “pop”. Sporty, light weight  and casual, this watch for me is the most beautiful. While I would be thrilled to own any of these variants, this rare and sublime version is the one that appeals to me most.

So whether you have seen any in person or just viewed and reviewed them from photos and various posts written about them, how do you feel about each of them?

Best, Patekova

PS - On a side note, on May 20 a fascinating interview of Thierry Stern by Ben Clymer founder of Hodinkee, appeared on the Hodinkee website. Much of the interview revolves around the anniversary pieces but many other watches and Mr. Stern’s goals and methods and philosophy are discussed. Quite illuminating and extremely interesting. I highly recommend it. I think Patek Philippe’s present and future are in very good hands.
