that Patek buckled under the pressure of the big watch craze. If I remember correctly the 5070 first began production 10 years ago with 5070J, before people were really clamoring for 42 mm watches. This design arrived on its own merit and in hommage to some relatively large Patek chronos of the past.
The only drawbacks of the larger size are the over-mentioned issue regarding a smaller movement in a larger case, and perhaps the issue that this is too large for many wrists for a dress chrono. (If the 5070 has been so hyped at 42 mm, just think if this was instead a 40 mm case!).
Irrespective of tastes, economy, and other points in this thread, I do believe it is safe to say that there were more 5970P produced than 5070P. How many of each is anyone's guess, but I think the 200 range may be close for 5070P, and too low for 5970P.
