My perpetual dilemma 5140G or J
I recently made a very big decision in my watch life and put a deposit on a 5140G, my all time favorite Perpetual Calender (well, you can't get a new 3940 anymore...). I have never owned a Patek Phillipe, but next week I will be going home with one. I was quite surprised, perhaps somewhat dissapointed, when Patek Phillipe announced that the gold versions of the 5140 would retire and at least for 2016 only live in a new charcoal and the existing black platinum/diamond version. Both platinum versions are nice, but not the colours I want and being beyond my price range anyways they are not an option. Had they not discontinued the gold versions I probably wouldn't have panicked and started searching for dealers with final stock and actually do it. So thank you for that Patek Phillipe, I am now realizing a dream. I have always believed that the white gold version was the one for me, but after seing the J and G next to eachother in real life I now have my doubts. If I already had one watch in one of those precious metals it would be a lot easier, but I don't. I have a steel IWC Mark XVI as my only watch.
The white gold is more understated and the yellow appears too me to be more extravagant. I don't like the rose gold version as much as the white or yellow, so my luxury dilemma stands between these too and I must choose next week. in either case I will get it with a new strap as these have been used on display.
Which one would you go for? Why? I appreciate your comments.

J is more dressy and yellow go seems to be sometimes fashionable, sometimes "out" and considered old fashioned. White gold, steel and platinum are the safest choises and with white metal you can always play with the strap. Ask the seller to order you two ...

I think the yellow looks great, and you can\'t go wrong with either. In saying that, you only have two watches. The white gold can be worn in more situations in my opinion, and as you\'re other watch is an IWC Mark, you\'re probably more of a white metal ...
yellow gold is eternity!
A perpetual calendar needs magnitude, grace and the big stage. White gold is o.k ... but nothing else! Watches were, are and will always be made in numbers in yellow gold as yellow gold is popular in the world. Tell us your choice. Best Moritz

Forget everything. Just ask yourself "which one speaks to me?". Since you have taken the plunge to ask others (welcome!) you may be a little self-conscious (in a good way). If so, white gold. If a little more showy, yellow. If you are stealth showy, then ...
White Gold would be my choice
More versatile with the colour of the straps and shirts. I think this white gold is also Rhodium plated so will give the watch a harder surface to wear.

I emphatize with your dilemma. Sometime back I was asking myself the same question too. Somehow for the 5140, the J seems to attract me much more than the G. If I had to choose, it would be the J then.. and even now. The G is nice and probably more versat...

it was a 3940, then I'll go for the G. Although the J is a close second. Somehow the 5140, the J appeals much to me. As already mentioned by others here, just go with what your heart tells you. IMHO, can't go wrong with either metals. Cheers !

Thank you for your comments and thoughts. I will stick to my original decision and go for the G. It doesn't look better, it just appeals a little more to me somehow. I will share some pics next week.

Now that I've gotten out of the way the most useless advice ever, I would go yellow for this piece. Such a classic perpetual calendar requires an equally timeless color. Rose and white are currently the more popular metals, but this is not a mere mortal's...

If I buy both I will certainly be divorced, which means my wife will leave with half and I will end up with only watch anyway .
Yellow gold...I can only compare gold colors to wine...
...varietals. There are a lot of red wine grapes, but Cabernet is king. I think this especially holds true for a case on an iconic, classic watch.

Yes they are 911 cufflinks. I would just advise you, before you buy a 5140 try a 3940.... take the time to try on. I was dead set on buying a 5130g. Then just for kicks I came across a 5110g... guess which one I bought . Same thing happened with a 5170......
I have 3940j, 3940g and 5140g
and I kept the 3940G for its size and metal, just me. WG is almost 'invisible', J is 'mildly flirtatous' and RG is "screaming Please Take Me..!!!!" hahahahaha, just me. Mech.
A fine perpetual
