Funny. I have been offered a 5712 Rose Gold from my regular AD whom I have bought several watches from. The price he listed was SGD$10K above list price. I tried to negotiate to no avail . He refused to budge as that is the 'market price'. This is coming from a well known HUGE AD in Singapore. I absolutely love the watch and refused to pay such a high premium. Alas, I walked away disappointed. Few days later, the watch was still available (in the safe, never been up for display). It was then I know, the AD was striking up a private 'bidding' among customers. That left a distaste in my mouth.
So I decided to survey the current 'market price'. So I went to another different AD and they told me flat, that they have a long waiting list and there is 'no chance' of me getting it. Basically, I was turn down. FLAT. Bugger. No price of watch either. Said that watch has to be in physical stock to determine price. Again - priced accordingly to market's demand according to him.
So I carried on my search and found out that there is another AD that previously sold a WG for SGD$2K more than list. And he mentioned that he is able to get either a RG or WG at the end of the year for no more than SGD$4K above list. I asked to put on the list as I wanted the watch badly and willing to pay up to SGD$4k for it. However, my gut feeling told me that if another buyer is willing to fork out more than me, he would probably walk away with it happy. But on the other hand, if this AD were to keep what he had promised, I would not hesitate to maintain a long term relationship in the future with this dealer. It is such a shame really that my trusted dealer has decidedly to raise the stakes on this watch - knowing the market but decidedly so to act upon this demand on his customers. This is how it works I guess. Sad to say but I might be taking my business somewhere else the next time.
