Patek Philippe

Dear watch enthusiasts. For a while I have been in a search of a personal grail. I suppose the Patek Philippe 5101 could be it. What I liked about the watch: - true art deco styling with unique case shape - extremely understated - decoration of the moveme...  

Did you try the watch?

...I like the stealth nature of it (no hole in the dial). But for a serious ($$) collector, it would be just one of many...

...as most of them sit in a bank vault to begin with. Not sure why 'few men will wear this watch.' ?

But it does fall under high end game.

But they are slow sellers and not very popular because of the rectangular case shape I assume. There is a beautiful blue dial version that is going up for auction at Christies next week. It might go low and could be worth following.

Maybe blue is the most beautiful variant. I saw the watch, but i don’t have experience in auctions. The watch is a super slow seller, but I don’t like to sell watches I buy. That’s why I try hard to pick the watches I love.

My knowledge of technical aspects has a lot of room for improvement.

I especially like that the tourbillion doesn’t have a gaping hole on the dial. I haven’t figured out an end game watch for me yet. I need a certain amount of variety because there are so many great watches in existence.

even seen it in real life. But, for what it’s worth, even if I think it’s a masterpiece, two thoughts come to my mind. First, “end game” especially if Patek Philippe is concerned, evokes a minute repeater for me, ideally manual winding and with a tourbill... 

And there is actually a platinum example going up for auction at Christies next week as well. But I fear it will slip beyond my grasp.

1) Repeater I am a huge fan of anything musical. And having a minute repeater is a temptation. But from the logical point of view repeaters are quite fragile and they are not as useful as before. The first serious watch in my watch journey was a marvellou... 

The LF, to me, is a gorgeous understated everyday sort of watch... that is also a spectacular tourbillon. Whereas the 5101 has a MUCH stronger personality with its big elaborate rectangular art deco case. If my idea of 'endgame' was, just an everyday wear... 

As, for me, the only thing that can justify the purchase of such an expensive timepiece is the pleasure of wearing it as often as possible, I think I would personally go for the LF. This 'daily wearability' issue is what bothers me concerning the 5100 to ... 

And there's no doubt that it's a kind of masterpiece. To make it fully "end game", even though I'm personally attracted to colored gold, I think I would be tempted by the platinum variant. But the rose gold looks gorgeous too and I imagine the white and y...

Art deco elegance from the likes of 5010, 5014, 5111, 5124 and the 8 days. The 5101 series tourbillon however is something very special indeed..

How comfortable do you find it? Do you wear it for special occasions or on a daily basis?

Almost everything is perfect in this watch. Price aside, definitely way above my range, the only thing I don't like is the strap but this is just because I don't like leather straps in general; I suppose that a more casual one would make it the ideal watc... 

pure joy ! Too large for my wrist but I appreciated its art deco design, Brequet numerals and stepped lugs. "Endgame" is a yes ... for a while until the next watch comes along ! Let us know your decision.
