and beauty in this case is really in the eyes of the beholder. Engraving is ok to me but too much engraving as in the case with the 5990 in the photo might me misconstrued asbeing in poor taste even if it is to be a family heirloom. And I agree that only the manufacturer should be doing the engraving to keep the watch as original as possible. The definition of how much engraving is acceptable is quite subjective, a similar conundrum to having diamonds on men's watches.
What do members think of custom-engraved watches...
