I remember when Patek would introduce just a few
pieces each year and maybe remove one or two. Now, two new references would probably be considered laughable considering the demand for new styles each and every year that we have seemingly been accustomed to over the recent years. And the appetite grows each year.
So, what do you do? Adapt and improvise using what you already have.
Obviously, it's not everybody's cup of tea but it is a new style to keep the troops happy with some new variations even if it uses the same movement as the smaller 3796.
I don't get so worked up about it as long as it functions correctly. Just think what the cost would be if they developed a new calliber! Might just like the 5123 better as it is.

I went to the Baselworld exhibition few days ago. When looking at the new 5123R I exactly felt the same as you have described. I was very disappointed to see that they are using the same tiny movement. For me a clear no go for such a high priced watch. So...
