I personally prefer
manual winding watches which is strange as most of the watches I have are automatic. So why did I end up with more automatic watches than manual ones? Simply because whether or not a watch is manual or automatic when deciding on a watch is not as important as the dial, the hands, the numerals, the case design, the movement finishing and the reliability of the movement. In addition, the value retention of the watch is also important to me since as much as we all want to keep our watches, many of us have to sell off some of our watches at times to finance other purchases.
An important point here I think is irrespective of whether a watch is manual or automatic winding, I will wind my watches daily as for me this is one of the most satisfying emotions in our passion. You will notice that the best watchmakers - Dofour, Smith, Voutilainen and Rexhepi do not make automatic watches, only manual ones. Arguably, this is because a manual winding watch is more in line with traditional watchmaking.
For the record, my Pateks are mainly automatics just because many of their models are - perpetual calendars, world timers, sports watches.
