Automatic vs. Manual winding Patek?

Apr 29, 2021,07:29 AM

Hi, I’m still new in this forum.

I’m considering a reference 5153 which is automatic or a say Travel Time ref. 5134. Thoughts on automatic vs. Manual winding?
Thank you

such as the situation of use or other collection

Thanks my question is really just about automatic vs. self winding, and I used those as examples.

Although both watches are in the Calatrava line, they are very different in terms of functions and movements. If you enjoy winding your watch, then a manual movement fits the profile. The 5153 on the other hand has an interesting and usual design. Hence, ...

Thanks GLau! , definitely I go for design and my priority is on reference 5153.

I wonder if people have had any issues with manual winding, reminds me of some Cartier when I was a child. Any issues with the winding mechanism?

Thank you so much.

It would but the question is not about price points, but about what people think about either Automatic vs. Manual winding mechanisms and experience as a concept. Thanks

Great points you raised Sham! For some reason i like the beauty of the rotor, rotating freely, and also when it's felt when wearing some watches. I'm going to look closer at the makers you mention. I am looking ideally for a Patek 5135. Not yet an expert,...

Do you want an intimate connection with your watch, winding it a few seconds each morning or do you prefer the convenience and increased thickness of an automatic? Personally when it comes to dress watches I would only accept a manual wind, automatic for ...

Dressing up winding up?

Very interesting response. So are you saying that dressing up must be followed by winding up, and other less informal clothes go with automatics? Why do you think that? Very cultural response.

The connection is key

Manual wind offers you a tangible, intimate connection with your watch - you cannot just strap it on, you need to give it energy, most often each day. Manual wind movements are also slimmer due to the absence of a rotor, useful to note if you value that. ...
