Hi Puffy...
It wasn't a tough decision for me as the 5146 has been on my grail list for some time. As you mentioned, it has this extremely classic, quintessential, Patek Calatrava look. I absolutely love the soft-rounded corners from the bezel to the lugs and this also makes the 5960 one of my grails as well.
Yes, again as you pointed out, the 5205 ref. feels VERY contemporary and does not resonate to much with me. Here are a few snaps of mine for your enjoyment

Take a look at the Reardon book and compare the 5396 to References from the 40's and 50's that have apetures. They're not AC's but the dial layouts are unquestionably where the 5396 has its roots.
