Input appreciated....

I want an AC and love the look of these two...

I have a 5711 and 5167 so fancy something with a lighter coloured dial

I love the 5146 as it's typical classic patek
5205 is great too but more contemporary.. Also a bit bigger at 40mm vs 39mm for the 5146..

Any owners of these two who can comment pls?

cluttered dials, and let's be honest there's a lot going on here, I think it comes together very nicely. The power reserve is the icing on the cake... Wonderful... Compared to my 5167 and 5711 the 5146g would also offer the most contrast I guess..... This is one I could wear for the next 30 years and it'd still look sweet..

I think the use of apertures is much better than the dial on the 5146. I used to own a 5146 1/g and switched to a 5726 Nautilus. I also think the am/pm indicator is great, especially when setting it. The case of the 5205 is a very classic Patek case while the dial to me is amazing. The two tone black dial especially. I find it to be more retro Art Deco than 'modern'. It's an aesthetic that I really find exciting whereas then5146 is much 'plainer'. It is a VERY elegant watch to be sure and there are times I miss it but when I look at Patek's aperture calendar watches they just sing much louder to me. I know many will find this heresy but it's just how I feel. You gotta go with what sings to you but you already knew that. Good luck and Happy Holidays!

biggest issue I'd have is the lack of contrast between my other pateks... how does the tang buckle work when wearing for long periods of time?

I'm wearing an old man's watch! Both are great... It'd be perfect to own both there are other watches to be owned...

Because I love the concave bezel, the pierced lugs and the 24-hour indicator in the said watch.

I am also a fan of the aperture calendar and the two tone dial, makes the watch absolutely modern IMHO.

I own a 5711 and a 5164 as well. Each watch will have its purpose and use. I use the 5205 on dressier occasion which is probably around one or twice a month. My daily beater is the 5711 and when I travel, I go for my 5164.

Whatever your decision, wear the watch in good health!

I prefer how the 5205 looks on your wrist.

if it's going to be a special occassion wearer, 5146 if it's for every day.

The 5205 is more dressy and formal, the 5146 more practical. I personally don't like the "cartoon" power reserve indicator on the 5146 and the fat & fluffy numerals at the quarters, but I like the AC complication and moonphase display.

They are both very nice watches, but I chose the 5036 over the 5146, and added a 5205 to my collection.

I have had the privilege to own both the 5146 in J & G with the same coloured dial,as in your photo. It is a great piece and one that I wish in many ways I had hung onto, the subdials give it that, imo, a more vintage feel. And as Carl has pointed out, I find the PR a more useful complication then the 24 hr hand, which only main use, again imo is when setting the watch. The luminous hands, may appear out of sorts with the rest of the watches vintage look, but nonetheless I found it most useful at night.

Now, the 5205, which I have discussed on many occasions, is the more modern version of the 5146 with the exact same movement, apart from having a silicone part installed (apologise, as I can't remember its name!) & virtually the same module fitted on top, I say virtually because you have to take into account the PR over the 24 hour hand.

I very much like the layout of the dial, especially the apertures, and the case, with its "Torpedo Tube" as I call them, design, is a first and was designed by, I believe Thierry's wife.
The colour of the dial has been discussed many, many times by both me and others. The black dial is absolutely gorgeous and is normally my favourite. However recently the legibility of the black with the W/G hands has caused me a few niggles. And if I remember correctly, I did touch upon that item, in a previous review that I wrote about the watch.Last week I got to see again the lighter dial and it was an immediate hit with me. And hopefully while my 5205 is with the service centre, will get the dial changed.

Also bear in mind that the 5146 comes with a deployant clasp over a tang buckle.

If I had to choice between the two, it would be a very, very difficult decision, but if pushed, the lighter dial 5205 would possibly win, but only possibly.

I think the 5396 is better annual than both the 5146 or the 5205?  Classic design.  A little thinner in profile. 

I have no opinion either way.  Just wondering what your feelings are on the subject.

Take a look at the Reardon book and compare the 5396 to References from the 40's and 50's that have apetures.  They're not AC's but the dial layouts are unquestionably where the 5396 has its roots. 

It's not exactly the same dial, but you get the idea.  Classic layout of day and month apetures.  BTW, I don't have a 5396 and therefore I'm not insulted either way?  I just think the 5396 is a viable consideration when the conversation involves Patek AC's.

It has a superb case and I prefer the dial layout!

I have a 5146g (as pictured) and chose that one because it is much more timeless. It's dial and sub dials are clean, easy to read, classic and for me the design will hold up forever.
