First Patek Advice

Sep 04, 2021,02:33 AM

Hey All -

First time poster but long time lurker. I love the passion I see from my fellow collectors on this forum (particulary the Patek forum).

I have been collecting for about 7 years now and would like to add some Patek into the mix and was looking for some advice.

Below is a look at my current collection (stock pics). I would consider the bottom row expendable as I don't wear those watches as much and could put the money towards a couple Pateks. I don't wear the Moonwatch much either but it has sentimental value. I do like the Black Seadweller but if I had to, I would move it out.

One Patek I am sure to add is the 5524G Calatrava Pilot Travel Time. I tried this on in the flesh and was really surprised how much I liked it. Photos do not do it justice. Question is AD or Grey Market...

Now, I would like to add a dressier piece but not a formal watch. Something that I could wear with a suit but also wear with jeans. I also like to feel my watch on my wrist and don't like very thin watches and 38mm is the smallest diameter I would consider. My budget is not limitless and would like to stick with the "Complication" price range. The watches I have narrowed it down to include the 5205G (Blue Dial), 5205R (Black Dial), 5235R, 5960 (most variations but I may have too much blue in the collection). What are your thoughts? Anything I am overlooking?

Lastly, should I save some coin and buy Grey? Or would you recommend buying from my AD and develop the Patek relationship as I would love to land an Aquanaut one of the days. I already have a solid AP/Rolex relationship with this same AD. Maybe it makes sense to buy one from AD and one from Grey (like the 5524G). Maybe the discount on Grey is not enought to pass over the AD. Love to get your opinions.

Thanks for the help and can't wait to hear from you all.

A warm welcome to the Patek forum !

Adding Pateks to your collection is a meaningful and fun project ! Assuming you will continue your horological journey for the long term, building a relationship with an AD is also an important part of the process. Given your existing relationship with th...

Appreciate the reply. I checked on the 5205G and they said three people ahead of me so they suggested looking at something else. Maybe the 5205R? I need to give the Worldtime a shot and try on the 5230. I have tried on a 5130P and was smitten but that wou...

Not interested in a 5396?

To my eye, the 5396 variants are much more elegant and classic than the options laid out. The have more Patek design DNA in them.

5396 Considerations

This was my original front runner but then I tried it on and for the exact reasons you listed as merits, are the exact reasons I don't think I would wear it as much as I'd like. It's beautiful and elegant and the black shiny strap gives it such a formal l...

Interesting

I'm considering one and that is precisely how I plan to wear it. Dressed down on a brown suede strap!

Welcome to our great forum, and (even if I might sound predictable here) I can only embrace your decision to purchase your first Patek! ;-) Even more so after, from what I can gather, an already nontrivial horological journey!

As for which Patek to purchase, I’d definitely go for the one *you* personally like best…this should be the guiding principle, before any other considerations!😉 A 5524 is definitely an excellent choice, and so are any of the calendars you showed (as well ...

5960 Variation

 By: Dschmidt91 : September 5th, 2021-13:59
Thank you. Have you seen them in the flesh? Any favorite varients. So many choices...

Welcome!

Given you already know you want a 5524g, I'd buy that one now and wait at least half a year with the other decision. For me, it would destroy the honeymoon time with one watch to buy another one basically at the Same time. Regarding these Patek I see only...

Excellent Advice

Never thought about the address info. Totally agree on Honeymoon stage, I have gone in and out of many watches over my time and there has been times where I'd purchase 3 in 3 months and the one I got first was sent to the backburner way to quickly!

Thank you

Thank you for the advice and the welcome. The 5205g has 3 people ahead of me but I could perhaps ask what the wait would be for 5205R. I have not had a chance to try on all the Worldtimers but I did try on the 5130P at a 2nd hand shop and I must say, it w...

I vote 5960P

Fits your wrist perfectly! Definitely high on the list!

Thanks for sharing.

What about a World Time?

 By: SpareTime : September 4th, 2021-19:44
A quintessential Patek complication that can really span casual to formal.

+1 with this suggestion.

5130P

 By: Dschmidt91 : September 5th, 2021-14:10
I must admit I did have the opportunity to try on a 5130P and it felt great on the wrist. Not many out there though for sale...

Welcome to the forum and hope to see you post regularly. Of rhe choices you listed, I would lean more towards a 5235R and 5960 reference...

As for going AD or grey market, that is up to you and what type of relationship you have with your AD. I would always choose the AD route since I value this type of relationship to help their business as well as curate my collection and pieces I would wan...

Short Term Pain

 By: Dschmidt91 : September 5th, 2021-14:12
Have you tolerated a good amount of short term pain throughout you collecting career? For example, the 5524G could be had for high 30s grey vs retail of 53k. I wonder if the AD would offer a 10% discount to ease the pain.
