told me constant running will not hurt the watch or will allowing it to sit. The oils dry out at the same rate regardless. I would definitely get your 3970 in for service given its age. I think the best indicator of the oil condition in a manual watch is the power reserve. If yours still runs 65 hours on a full wind its still in decent shape oil wise.

Not too much winding
It is better not to wind them so often, they will wear out much less. In the mean time, winding them once iin a while keeps the oils work properly on the long run.
