After the chronographs shot I posted here www.watchprosite.com
, I wanted to share a group shot of the 2 World Time based references: the 5230G and R together with the 5930G.
I was very impressed by the 5230 pieces. They leave a masculine and elegant feeling that makes them look a little more contemporary than the previous generations. The case is quite pure with straight lines but are very pleasantly embellished by the new lugs. They bring a modernized look to a traditional design, that we can see in more classical references as the 5270 for instance, while remaining pure. This helps focusing the attention on the dial side.
These lugs (seen in the 5930 as well) are a very important detail for me which I noticed more clearly only after a little while when I saw the model for the first time from the Basel press-kit. However, the first element that I focused on was of course the dial and how the whole decoration works perfectly. Indeed, the hands (a successfully designed element for all the models whether it is the 5110, the 5130 or the 5230), the guilloché dial (not only the pattern but also the satined finish and beautiful grey color choice) and the fonts used for the cities make a very homogeneous combination to bring a lot of strenght and charisma to the watch.
On the other side, the 5930 was also very impressive as it was obvious that Patek Philippe has spent a lot of effort in making it reasonnable in terms of size (39.5mm). I was very relieved that there are still brands thinking that the space optimization is part of the refinement of a watch and a watchmaking goal on its own. This is performed in a period of time when complications often rhyme with increased thickness and width.
The 5930's dial has this 1950's charm I like very much too, thus opting for a very different style from the 5230.
On the picture below, try to isolate the 5230G on the left and look at it for a while: it looks very dressy (black/grey/white combination) but with a modern-classic spirit in the same time. It is thus very elegant and refined though not as traditional as the previous models. I love that and this is, in my opinion, how Patek succeeds in bringing evolutions without falling into the fashionable trends.
But more about this later in the hands-on reviews.
Cheers, Mark
