when one considers such an important decision as buying the first Patek.
Mike gave a very lengthy reply and I think the considerations are well covered. Except for one, the price.
With the options u have, buying one pre-owned/ from AD ? How much do u expect to pay ? Would u feel good with the watch after your purchase ? To be a daily wearer, you gotta like it very much even after having to pay the huge amount of money. Suppose u saved up a long time, the pleasure of owning a watch must outweigh the pinch of parting with the cash.
The popularity of these pieces are worth reading up about also. I visited a local dealer selling preowned watches and new pieces. The site had 2 5960 PC preowned. Even before these 2 could be sold, he brought in a new mint (5960). Now, many pieces (including a 5970, 5059, 5055 and a 5146) that are consigned after the 2 initial 5960 were consigned have already been traded. But the 3 5960 still sits cold on display. That speaks volume about the pieces relative popularity.
As much as we avoid discussing price and value, $$ is a real consideration. Buy one that you truly love so that you never have to resell it. But suppose u forsee that u might trade the first Patek to climb the Patek ladder and buy more expensive pieces, popularity and resale value could be something additional to think about.
Unfortunately, we do not discuss prices here. So how much u like each piece and ultimately which piece stands out is entirely up to u. Follow ur heart.
As for me, there was not a moment looking back ever since I bought my first Patek. Not now, and never. My mind was clear when I bought it.
