16 years with my Patek Philippe 5110P.

Nov 02, 2020,08:57 AM

I won't tell you again how and where I got my 5110P, you know the story by heart, as I repeat it each year.

No, the most important is that it is one of my favorite Patek, if not THE Patek for me, and that the love story becomes stronger and stronger with years passing.

There are watches you wonder if they are or will be keepers and others you are sure they are keepers, here to stay with you, since the beginning.

Indeed, there is something I like to remember: My feelings when I discovered at its launch, in 2000. It was a coup de foudre ( doesn't it sound so romantic, in french? ).

The white gold was my target, as I thought I would never be able to put my hands on the platinum, which I preferred for its blue grey dial and for the superb density of its case.

The white gold and its white dial looked like a more realistic choice, easier to reach, and still, even if the platinum had my preference, it didn't sound like a " second choice ", by far!

Fate, Luck, whatever you want to call it, played on my side, when I was offered the platinum by my favorite AD in Italy. I knew it was my time, the planets were aligned, and my dream was about to come true.

I immediately knew, from the very first minutes of ownership, that it will be a watch for life.

And 16 years, that starts to become an important slice of life!

THAT is an important factor, time passing, in the appreciation you feel for a watch.

Indeed, in our current days, people think in the short term, which doesn't allow them to fully appreciate, know or enjoy their watch. They buy, they sell, at a very quick pace.

They change their mind, they don't take the time. They want the novelty of the year, to the detriment of what they already own. The love of today will last till the love of tomorrow, which sounds contradictory wit the arrogant motto of the brand, you know, " the keepers of today for the generation of tomorrow "...

Which leads me to THE quintessential point of this watch: The Patek 5110 is not only a charming, a beautiful watch, it is a watch which TOTALLY lacks arrogance. It is not a watch for flippers, it is a watch for true lovers, it is an authentic watch which escaped to the marketing blabla in favor of pure love and appreciation. In other terms, authenticity versus superficiality.

I am not a Patek Fan, but let me tell you that: When it comes to the 5110, Patek just created an icon. I strongly believe that it is a Classic, and that since Day One. And you can compare it to any other world time, it is not the most practical nor the most useful or the most friendly, but it certainly is the most charming and the most poetic. Perhaps one of the most beautiful.

Compared to other Patek World Time " Only ", I would add that it is the most completed, with a perfect size ratio between the dial and the case. Some will prefer the 5130 / 5131or the 5230 / 5231, I will still favor the 5110 because of that.

Add a superbly finished dial and the lovely Cal 240 ( even if it could, in an ideal world, be better finished ), and its magic complication ( especially when you are grounded ) and you have a true masterpiece. No, better, a milestone.

Long life to the 5110!

Best,

Nicolas

It’s definitely a very beautiful WT. For me, it’s a close call between 5110P and 5130P. Luckily, I don’t have to make a decision. May you enjoy yours for a long time. Best, V.

😂

I don’t have to make a decision because I won’t be buying any of those two. Love both but, as a general rule, I’m only buying new from AD.

Fantastic post...

I had the VC World Time for a time and prefer your Patek. Better legibility and size and quite frankly, more elegant.

I would have kept that one...

The one I had was the Overseas! ...

Not bad, either! [nt]

Beautiful Patek and story

The 5110P is a nice Patek. I enjoy the story. 16 year anniversary is a milestone. Then MiguelFlash shows his VC Overseas world timer. Oh, a world timer watch can look that way, the right way. I can not help it, i am more a Vacheron Constantin man then a P...

My first Patek love.

 By: Jay (Eire) : November 2nd, 2020-11:54
Maybe not the P, but the G for me at the time was my first Patek love. And I am not a Patek guy either, but I do love this reference. What is so good about these pictures is that they show a watch which has clearly been worn. Thanks for sharing.

Fantastic watch

Good to see a long term ownership of a beautiful watch. Next year my first PP will be 20 years... my love for this one has sorry to say diminish with time and new watches. But it will always be in my collection as it has a personal meaning to me 😏 Good to...

👍🏻 Great post. I know you love it to the bones.

Always a pleasure to read your naked feelings for it ;-) It is not important that I like, love it or that will pick another model, what I find admirable is to see your continuous and faithful emotions for... she.

I love my G to bits

Everything you say about the perfection of this reference is right on the money. It's my only Patek, and I bet that five years from now, it will still be my only Patek! ...

Defining a Brand

I celebrate your post. I include a picture of my collectables which happen to match by color. These two specimens define each one of their brands for life. ...

Beautiful car.

This is my favorite version of Patek WT, too - the hands, the guilloche, the color... Too bad this reference is long discontinued...

Thank you for this amazing post!

 By: Musigny82 : November 3rd, 2020-07:23
I totally agree with you the 5110 is a classic and a keeper! It is my only watch which I never thought of selling!! It is THAT good and seductive. My RG says hello! ...

That blue dial guilloche..

This is my personal favorite of the PP WT. the dial and hands combination is wonderful. Also the enamel, although beautiful, scare me as a daily wear but this one can go anywhere but the pool. Enjoy.

Thanks, Justin. [nt]

I always enjoy reading your posts. I remember during those times I went for an annual calendar and I still have my 5056P. different watches but in the same era. Benz

Such an enjoyable read. Thank you.

I subscribe entirely to the sentiments you express, in particular the value of time and relationship that grows with it. I'm sure the buy-to-flip approach has its own satisfactions but it's not for me either. I use watches to slow things down to enjoy gra...

The love for #5110P is transmitted

 By: anaroku : April 17th, 2021-19:48
It is worthy of respect to continue to cherish the same clock of fate for 16 years. I think that PP #5110P is deserves it.

Wonderful post my friend

I never get tired of you posting some of the watches, which include the 5110p. I know your deep love for the reference all these years. I am contemplating adding a worldtime maybe. Both the 5110 and 5130 are under consideration. I have a strong liking for...
