Maybe you are looking for an IWC...

Nov 06, 2011,05:45 AM

If I remember well, in the past IWC used to be called "poor man's Patek"....

Anyway, remember that a watch never close a search...

I wish you best in your challenge.

A poor man's consideration into the world of Patek.

 By: patrickmaniac : November 5th, 2011-09:04
Hi gurus, would like to seek some advise/ your thoughts on a simple question. If you were to consider a start into Patek, what would be your 1st watch (not neccessary new). My constraints would be 1. Price: USD $20-30k 2. Worldtimer or Annual calendar ran...

collectors market?

i'm no expert, but it seems that something up your alley has recently been posted in the collectors market.

Would take a look.

World Time, 5110 or 30.

 By: amanico : November 5th, 2011-10:09
Don't see any better first ( even if it is the only one, by the way ) PP. A superb look, an icon, a fine movement, a friendly complication, and a nice case, all that makes that this watch has no real contender... What else? Best. Nicolas

Yep was thinking of hunting for a 5110.

Hi Pat, this is a lot of bucks you are able to spend for your first PP. I am with Nicolas if you want a pretty "new" watch take a world timer - an all time classic... I have a 5110 PT and I love it very much. But for this money you can buy incredible vint...

I fear a 3417 is way above 20 K USD, my friend. :(

 By: amanico : November 5th, 2011-12:24
Finding one for 20 K USD would be a miracle, and I would immediately jump on it if correct and in good condition. Best, Nicolas.

Thanks for the tips Erich.

I must agree with Nico,

 By: dr.kol : November 5th, 2011-12:25
Patek's World Time represents everything PP stand for. It's a watch design full of history and you can find a second hand perfect example with a reasonable amount of money. Another watch which you can find with around 10k is Golden Ellipse. It's an iconic...

It's a nice watch.

 By: dr.kol : November 5th, 2011-13:30
However, I feel that the World Time offers much more and it's available in WG at around 25k. Best, Kari

Hi Kari, thanks for the PM. Really appreciate it.

Good luck with your hunt!

 By: dr.kol : November 6th, 2011-07:37
It looks that my 4 years hunt has ended. The watch has been paid and with a little bit of luck I will get it next Friday. Then I have agreed with Patek Salon to bring my watch for repairs and full maintenance in the end of November and by the end of Janua...

I think the two pieces you mentioned are fine

examples and either would be an excellent choice. You can certainly go the vintage route but I would think it best to begin with a more recent piece. There are many watches that meet you criteria and pocketbook.

will do. :)

Annual calendar...

 By: Zhege : November 5th, 2011-15:24
This seems to me to be a more useful complication than the world timer - unless you really need to keep track of the time in 3 or more timezones. Obviously this is a very subjective issue, but I find the look of world timers to be too cluttered. Others ca...

I was also thinking of the 5035/5036/5146

but hunting one down would be my quest. cheers PAt

Something classical ....

 By: tic-toc : November 5th, 2011-16:41
Patek has made some iconic watches in the past, some of which are affordable today as most collectors has moved onto larger watches. A few that comes to my mind which is within your budget. ref : 3445 in yg or wg, automatic with 27-460 movement, classic, ...

Thank you for the great tips!

 By: kaaseng : November 6th, 2011-05:37
If u really poor or got no much money don't buy it. Keep your money.. for your raining days. Patek not for poor people. Buy CASIO digital watch 5USD for one.

I don't think your tone is much appreciated and looking at your post count my guess is

Firstly: nice to hear that you are prepared to pay such money for a mechanical watch, for a Patek Phillipe. Secondly: a Patek is not a poor men's watch! Regardless the level of mechanics, new or bought from preowned. We see and discuss quite costly watche...

 By: ivanclai : November 6th, 2011-18:51
There are PP's classic models with a long history. There are many good condition pre-owned 5110 around, I got my 5110p pre-owned 6 months ago. If you like simplicity and don't wear the same watch all the time, WT is the choice. You just pick it up, set th...

First Patek

 By: Kevin22 : November 7th, 2011-08:21
Hi PAt, Welcome to the world of Patek! You sound like a super nice guy and we welcome you to starting your Patek collection! I think the 5110 given your budget makes for a very sensible first Patek to collect. Also I like the 5146G which you may be able t...

Thanks kevin for the advice. Indeed these times are hard!

Patek

 By: maxbliss888 : January 1st, 2012-08:51
The fun is in the hunt as well as the deliberation on what watch to get! Enjoy the hunt and the thinking and deciding which Patek to buy! It's a true pleasure!

in a somewhat similar position

 By: dannyjak : January 5th, 2012-17:19
and was wondering what kind of progress you've made? my budget is more around the 25k mark. I would potentially toss up between a brand new 5296R or a 5110G, both seem like iconic Pateks in their own way Love the 5146 too though, albeit a bit more expensi...

What did you end up getting instead?

What about a 5036?

 By: daytonaman799 : January 6th, 2012-15:03
The Case may be smaller (36mm) but it's a GREAT annual and prob could be had at the low end of your range. St the upper end you nay be able to get a 5146. If not within...just above. That is a great bang for your buck to get a complicated PP. Good luck.

Yep was considering that too but rather hard to find over where I am.

Patek 3445

 By: changhl88 : April 4th, 2012-21:58
Bought a Patek 3445 automatic with dates in YG 17 years ago. It is a good reliable and great looking watch. Ideal for small wrists.
