paid a substantial amount over the official list price for piece? I am currently really keen on a limited piece, that was never part of the official collection. The watch is still sealed. The seller asks for a premium between 75% and 100% over the origina...

...as one of great sayings of Joe goes.... ever heard of someone on death bad saying.... I really shouldn't bought that Ferrari Cheers D

I suppose that I have.

 By: Chimaera : April 11th, 2017-12:11
I bought the Saatchi 3940g. Although bought from PP at the price they asked, I knew that it was a significant premium over a "normal" 3940g. I did it because I wanted to. And I wear it regularly. You\'re not crazy, you\'re in love. Nothing rational about ...

I have personally never paid such a premium.

 By: zabreg1 Mr White : April 11th, 2017-12:09
I do however understand where you\'re coming from. If I had the means, I wouldn\'t worry about the premium. After all, the watch\'s true worth is in the eye of the owner. In short, absolutely would. And I never keep my watches stashed away, I wear them al...

Thank you, Zagreb.

If you really love it... buy it! Nothing to add

Best wishes Alkiro

I have.

And i would. No debate at all.

More than once It is a fact of life Demand > supply =$$$$

Absolutely not

 By: Poky : April 11th, 2017-12:25
Even if I had won the lottery, I would not pay that much above the retail price. A little bit of wait is part of the fun. What is happening with 5711 currently is ridiculous. It encourages the grey market, makes the waiting time even longer and makes mone...

I completely agree if it would be a 5711, but it's not

 By: dom007 : April 11th, 2017-12:28
It is definetely not a piece on that you can wait for. It's just as simple as 'pay for it or move on'...

I may be wrong but

 By: Baron - Mr Red : April 11th, 2017-12:29
I think Dom\'s issue isn\'t about a waiting issue. I would t pay up to avoid a queue. I would pay up to get something I wouldn\'t otherwise get

Exactly [nt]

In which case...

 By: Baron - Mr Red : April 11th, 2017-12:40
You need to ask yourself a crucial question. The L\'Oreal question. "Are you worth it?"

Somebody is making a lot of money from it

 By: Poky : April 12th, 2017-14:48
50% above the retail price for a sealed and 30% above the retail price for a used watch. Truly ludicrous but somebody must be buying these or the prices would not go up.

Patek has very succesful models with the 5711 and 5712,

By: Mark in Paris : April 13th, 2017-01:43
like all the Nautilus line, but these 2 references are thinner and fit better most of the clients. But this is a problem if, for such a brand, one model, especially in Steel, represents an excessive part of the whole sales. Patek doesn't want to be recogn...

I agree with Patek's decision

 By: Poky : April 13th, 2017-08:43
I think most other brands also follow the same ethos by not producing a lot of one particular model. Nautilus has been very successful, so credit to Patek for producing such a piece. The same situation is going on with the Rolex Daytona in SS. I wonder ho...

Well, I don't have the answer but

By: Mark in Paris : April 13th, 2017-09:00
I would say that since it lasts, it means that the market is doing quite well, still better than if they didn't have that demand anymore. However, I think that going for a second hand 5711 is something nice as well and should be considered too. That's an ...

Just do it....

Do you really love it?.....

 By: watercolors : April 11th, 2017-13:08
do you love it as much as the seller loves his premium? Can you live one more day without the piece? Will you wake up with buyers remorse? Is this the love of your live? I think I would go with option B which means: my other first choice for "normal" pric...

I never saw an unsealed one...

 By: dom007 : April 12th, 2017-08:54
I don't think I would consider it if it would be unsealed.

I didn't,But I would if I have the means

 By: beejo : April 11th, 2017-14:05
I am against paying to avoid a queue definitely,But for a piece that is already discontinued I would do it happily and wear it would I leave it in the seal?! But I would also think what would this amount of money brings me on the other hand,Let\'s for ex...

Well, if you like it that much...

By: Mark in Paris : April 11th, 2017-14:28
It depends if it is really something you've been looking at for a long while (so you know you love it) or if it is new (then I would suggest to wait a little longer in order to be sure). Of course, it also depends on your budget and the price of the watch...

I have never paid over retail, but

By: Time to watch : April 11th, 2017-14:36
Then again I've never been in this position either. Firstly are the auction prices you mentioned for unsealed watches? Secondly is this a watch that, before it was offered, you wanted and waited for? Lastly if you walk away, could you find an unsealed ver...

If the watch is extremely limited, I guess the retail price is kind of irrelevant. What matters is whether it's at a fair market price.

 By: RussW : April 11th, 2017-14:48
Also bear in mind that when you cut the seal the watch is going to lose value immediately. I think you should buy it, so we can see it on your wrist It must be incredible, maybe a 3670?

The loss in value if I cut the seal is only hypothetic as I have absolutely no intention to sell it.

 By: dom007 : April 13th, 2017-11:03
I would rather be annoyed, if I would see the same reference for sale a few month later for a much favourable price. No 3670, Unfortunately! Not yet... ;-)

Personally...

 By: sham1 : April 12th, 2017-03:43
I would not pay over list price for anything but that is just a principle I live with. However, I also believe if you want something badly enough, you should buy it (irrespective of the price) because the opportunity may never come again. Also for some wa...

I definitely would.

 By: aris d : April 12th, 2017-07:22
After all, the real price is the one that someone is willing to pay. Aris

I agree.

ensure that you have recourse if the watch is not brand new after you have Patek service center checked it out. Perhaps put funds in escrow or make only partial payment. If it is a chrono24 dealer, then see it there is an insurance policy that you can pur...

Several questions

By: Mark in Paris : April 12th, 2017-10:11
It is very hard to say without knowing what watch it is but here are a few things I would think of (I don't have such purchase experience). Have you seen the watch, the dealer or is it something you've done with pictures and phone calls? They are 2 very d...

Is it really that easy?

 By: dom007 : April 13th, 2017-10:56
Do you get an positive answer, if you ask Patek Salon for the provenience of a piece with just a serial and movement number?

I think it also depends on the relationship

By: Mark in Paris : April 13th, 2017-13:19
but I think you can explain the case, you are going to buy a Patek and would like to know if the serial number exists and coherent with the watch you're buying. Best, Mark

Which reference?

 By: Mr. M : April 12th, 2017-12:14
Is that a secret? Sounds like a rare piece.

It's not a secret and

 By: dom007 : April 13th, 2017-10:26
I prefer if we could have a general discussion about this topic or challange and not a pro or contra discussion about a specific reference.

Was just curious which ref demands such a high premium.

 By: Mr. M : April 13th, 2017-11:26
Personally I would not buy very expensive watches on the grey market neither below or above retail price. I don\'t like the 1% risk there might be despite feeling 99% safe about the history of the watch, the dealer etc.

I would do it. But

 By: drphileasfogg : April 12th, 2017-13:00
I would ask myself the same questions I do for regular pieces: Never buy without seeing it: yes even if it means a long trip. Especially if we talking over 100k or obviously more. Can you afford to loose this money? In the end some rare pieces are a good ...

sealed watch

 By: jon_jon : April 13th, 2017-03:19
Purchasing a sealed rare watch and paying over retail is a big decision. Here are a few things to consider: 1) Are you comfortable paying over retail for a low production watch that seldom comes up for sale? The answer would have to be a resounding yes to...

Thank you Jon for sharing your experiences.

 By: dom007 : April 13th, 2017-10:31
In any case I would want to see the watch personally before I buy it. I know, looking for a sealed piece is quite irrational as every Patek, that was in service returns to the AD sealed an in a brown cardboard box...

on a 3940 once. Sold as new and single sealed. I asked specifically if it was first seal and unworn. This New York seller never replied even after asking a couple of times. I smelled a rat and asummed it was sealed after a service to pump up the price for...

I bought last year

a 5450P. The watch was double sealed and I paid around 50% premium compared to the original price. Taking into account that I missed the original offering, I think a made a fair and good deal. Best, Kari

Are there any reasons not to buy it?

 By: whit : April 16th, 2017-06:02
Personally, I don't believe I could pull the trigger especially if it is a relatively recent piece. Since 1989, the limited production pieces have become far more frequent and there is no reason to believe it will not continue .. a celebration of the new ...
