The 3448 is a very sweet watch. Ive always coverted one but am yet to secure one.

Until that time comes, I will have to settle for my Rolex 8171.....

Patek Philippe reference 3448 - the "wonder watch"

 By: Baron - Mr Red : July 27th, 2017-09:10
A watch manufacturer gains reputation through a variety of different avenues. For Patek Philippe, one could argue that over its long history, it has maintained a dedication to quality and craftsmanship that has set it apart from other manufacturers. Equal...

You both own a watchmaking piece of history

Best wishes Alkiro

Fantastic write up Joe!

 By: sham1 : July 27th, 2017-09:26
You summed it up beautifully as class is something that does not necessarily go to the superior model but the one with the X factor!!

Hey Sham.....

 By: Baron - Mr Red : July 27th, 2017-09:27
......yes....like you I collect both vintage and modern, but learning how to appreciate that Factor X is hard.....it takes more than a wallet.

I agree!

 By: sham1 : July 27th, 2017-09:37
That X factor is quite subjective in some cases but the 3448 is a bit special as is 'my' 1530A

Amazing writeup.

About this Reference. Well stated, and I agree with your arguments for this watch and Pateks QPs in general. Bravo, Brandon

Your perpetual is without # 1 in its class and it is very difficult to find any finer watch from the current collection. Best, Kari

Hey Kari.....

 By: Baron - Mr Red : July 27th, 2017-10:49
......I think the perpetual is a fascinating beast. Each variant has something special about it. I have truly debated the modern 5327 with blue dial variant. I think it is stunning. But of all my watches, modern and vintage, the 3448 sings sweetest to me....

True!

 By: dr.kol : July 27th, 2017-10:59
The new 5327 is stunning but I will wait till the platinum case will appear and then I'll get that. Another great is 5320 but with that it's a similar story - I'm waiting for platinum. However, in vintage watches YG is really nice because it's the vintage...

Nothing controversial about your opening statement.

 By: TheMadDruid : July 27th, 2017-10:51
The Perpetual Calendar watch, whether "simple", or mated to another complication, is quintessentially Patek-and a claim to fame, as well as horological"firstmanship"(if you're okay with that word). And boy do you come back with a bang after not posting fo...

I can clearly see why this watch

 By: beejo : July 27th, 2017-11:14
Is the wonder watch,The best perpetual to my vintage but no too much It's the 993 of perpetuals. Best, Ahmed

Thanks Ahmed......

not sure its air-cooled though

Isn't ?! Now I am disappointed 😄

Best, Ahmed

The reference is a wonder!

 By: Baron - Mr Red : July 28th, 2017-00:00
When I first saw it, I was hit. I knew I had to have it and I knew it would become an important watch for me. As an owner, it has become a much more meaningful watch.....takes a lot to knock the Mk2 off its perch.

He he he, sorry it took me some time but I now only discover your GREAT post my friend...

 By: Mike H : July 27th, 2017-12:01
...Really great article about the watch that has been my unreachable dream for so many years until... ...until I finally could make the dream come true this year ! I know I am Lucky (at least for that...) and YES still top banana smile when I look at it !...

That is the issue....

 By: Baron - Mr Red : July 28th, 2017-00:00
.....every time I look at the dial, it makes me smile.

Congrats on your 10k post and interestingly, you mentioned the GT3 RS...

 By: Clueless_Collector : July 27th, 2017-12:33
no question or doubt your 3448 is top banana, and the pinnacle of many PCs. For me, I will probably enjoy the GT3 RS more than the watch. I know some members here, or you 😁 can enjoy both, but I can only choose one and being a mostly modern guy, I go with...

GT3 RS.....

 By: Baron - Mr Red : July 28th, 2017-00:04
.....that is one incredible car. Stunning car. Maybe an easier comparison is an Aston DB5 vrs a Vanquish......the latter has every conceivable advantage over the former, but the DB5 will always have that something extra. I think you also raise another iss...

A wonder indeed!

......I wish I had had the foresight to buy a white gold version too.....but am happy with what I have.

This is Patek's finest calendar watch

 By: clomita : July 27th, 2017-18:26
I know the 3940 gets a lot of love, and it is well-deserved. It is beautiful, it is slim, it was Patek's answer to the naysayers who said quartz was going to put an end to mechanical watches... ...But the 3448 is the king. It is so clean and easy to read....

Yes....i agree.....

 By: Baron - Mr Red : July 28th, 2017-00:10
.......likeyou say it has such a clean dial....a purity. Many thanks

You Are So Right!

 By: gaquist : July 28th, 2017-07:52
This watch is beautiful and SO very easy to read! We can only hope for a modern interpretation of this beauty .

there is one...but as an annual calendar

5396.....shares a lot of DNA

Thank you Mr Red for an interesting and informative post !

 By: GLau : July 27th, 2017-18:35
The lugs look lovely ! Are the 5975 lugs inspired by this model ? They look similar. Cheers, Gordon

Not sure if it is the inspiration.......

 By: Baron - Mr Red : July 28th, 2017-00:11
......it was certainly an attempt in the 1960s to create something of a futuristic look. Also interesting to hear Patek themselves believe that its design was one of the best.

Thanks Joe for this very enjoyable 10k post

A pleasure to write

Incredible post Baron!!! There are some extremely rare variants of 3448 which I think bear mentioning. They are:

 By: patekova : July 29th, 2017-18:06
2 known in rose gold; a very few with no moonphase at 6 o'clock register and a WG 3448 with red dot leap year indicator (ala 3448). Examples of the last 2 of those variants were part of the recent extraordinary NY Christie's exhibit. Also, I think it bear...

I've come back to your post after some hours

 By: TheMadDruid : July 29th, 2017-19:08
and I read where you mention the 5396 sharing dna with the 3448. I see that not only in the dial lay-out (which has to be purposeful) but with the chamfered bezel as well; something also shared by the 5230. Makes one wonder if we will see more of this bez...
