F.P. Journe

I would run.

The seller isn't telling you a lot if he says this is a new watch but sold without the usual things a new watch comes with.

I have a cb from the first year of production and it came with similar box and accoutrements to the CS you are looking at. The two other Journes I bought from 5 or so years back came with full large wooden box and everything.

FPJ is moving to even more upscale than it already was, I can't see them cutting back. Maybe other folks here can confirm.

Thanks for the prompt response.

I’m now confirming the provenance with Journe HQ, and I assume it’ll check out just fine. But even if it does, I’m very particular about getting the full package (with all ‘accoutrements’) and this may just erk me and ruin the entire ownership experience.
I’m guessing you never asked if the warranty is transferable, and I hope that you never end up needing to sell your watches. But I may end up in a situation where I need to sell, and I don’t want to end up having to do a lot of explaining
Have a good weekend

If you have any chance of selling, make 100% sure you have a full set.

I don't remember about the warranty, so I didn't comment there, my apologies.

Excellent advice.

As an FYI for another people wondering the same question: the warranty (and warranty extension) are transferrable

I will be not of great help as my Journe purchase dates back to 2010. There was no USB card at the time, The warranty card was in a simple plastic folder but there was a small cloth.

If the watch is in good condition and keeps time accurately, the pricing fair,  having the box, warranty card and some papers, it already makes a quite good package.

I buy to own and enjoy, as opposed to flipping.

That being said, life is unpredictable and tastes change; I’d hate to be in a position where I have a lot of explaining to do
Besides, that large wooden box is just so so nice 😍

My CS came with similar packaging quite a few years ago

I'd say you are getting adequate insurance that it's genuine.

If you are happy with the watch and the deal, why not?

In my experience, ADs are relatively loose in controlling the small items. As am I when selling a watch I forget it came with two straps so sell only one, or I throw in a couple that I didn't realize I bought separately. Vague memories, crowded storage rooms, separating the packaging from the watch for display purposes, etc. all challenge the reality of delivering "the complete package".

Thanks cazalea. That’s a wonderful piece you have.

The seller didn’t strike me as one to misplace those sorts of accompaniments, and isn’t claiming that he lost them. That’s just what was given to him. The issue is that in our discussion, it became clear that all his other timepiece acquisitions included him ensuring that it was a complete package and getting extra paraphernalia on top. So the fact that he didn’t with this piece seemed out of character
But as long as Journe confirms that it’s his and that the warranty is transferable, then I shouldn’t have too much to cry wolf about. Is that what you are suggesting?

The small items are peanuts IMO

 By: Moka-Tiger (Ron) : August 27th, 2023-02:57
I have never traded an FPJ, but in my many experiences in trading in watches to get other ones, I have found that the first thing dealers ask for in many cases, before even looking at the watch, is the guaranty card surprisingly. Then the watch, finally the box. In many cases, the box I had was genuine but not the exact one for the particular watch. No big deal. As long as you have a geniune box, regardless of big or travel size or whatever, that is the main point. Those other items (USB, cloth, wallet, etc.) are all peanuts, or to put it more gently, "icing on the cake", but add no value. While you are not sure of selling, you never know what the future holds.
If the watch is genuine, if the watch guaranty is genuine, if the box is genuine, then the deal sounds worth serious consideration.
Those small items don't add up to anything AFAIK. And also make sure that the sellier is "genuine". That's the thing to watch out for IMO since it is a private sale.
The only concern I have is if this is a long-distance transaction and you cannot see the watch in person. Often times, private sellers go to a boutique
together and try to get some kind of confirmation about authenticity. Good luck. It's a beatuful watch at a more than beautiful price, so continue to do your homework
until you feel good about buying.

Excellent advice.

I checked the watch out in person, and examined the dial, case and caseback with a loupe. It checks out (it’s not like it’s easy to produce counterfeit FP Journe timepieces…I think)

NOS

 By: WatchNerd : August 27th, 2023-06:10
I think the seller got a NOS from the AD. Based on the box and card type, this piece should have been shipped to AD before 2017, but it never got sold or registered until 2021.
All pieces from Journe after 2017 are coming in the small square box.
Hope that helps answer your concerns.

Very helpful indeed. Does Journe HQ send the watches in the box, or just the watch and the AD boxes it upon arrival?

Was there a leather wallet and polishing cloth in the package of pre-2017 watches? Hoping you know.

The polishing cloth always come with the pieces

 By: WatchNerd : August 27th, 2023-09:03
I believe there was no leather wallet with this packing. I think your piece is quite early based on your card type, But I can't tell exactly without the serial number.

PM of SN sent to you.

Thanks for your help

I would wait and just buy it direct from the FPJ boutique...

 By: patrick_y : August 27th, 2023-07:01
Be patient.  Watch store inventories are rising as demand is slowing down from its all time highs.

I’m halfway through waiting for my Principia (I changed my dial color twice, so extended the wait by 2 more years) and Frodsham (2 years into the 6 year wait), so…

 By: Lankysudanese : August 27th, 2023-07:52
my patience is close to running out. And the local Journe boutique has no shortage of billionaires courting the management and sales staff at all times. So I’d say my chances are slim
But I do agree that the markets are softening: hence this proposition at a non-egregious asking price
Let’s see

I understand!

If you are really in love, go get it

If you are ready to pay a premium, the conditions and set look fine, you need no further investigations.
But according to your recent posts, you are still doubtful.
Perhaps your last purchase has left you more cautious about seller's statements (watches are always mint conditions full set brand new when they sell, otherwise when you want to trade it yours is always missing something), but if you do want a Journe, chances are extremely limited to get one at MSRP.
I don't  really think that the market slow down (crisis will never affect luxury goods) will allow you to get a brand new Journe, they have become extremely picky and selective (like many other brands).

I agree with what've you said.

 By: Lankysudanese : August 27th, 2023-17:45

are you buying at am much higher price than MSRP ?

 By: christianch : August 27th, 2023-10:02
It is very obvious that some missing parts (even the cloth) is bothering you. So it is possible that after the acquisition you won't be pleased. The fact that you are considering a sale/trade already is not a good sign.
I would generally not buy used but if I do, it has to be below MSRP.

Frankly, I think that waiting for a brand new one might provide the best experience. After a few weeks of this acquisition it won't feel as WOW or satisfying anymore so I wouldn't buy unless the price is right (which usually isn't on 2nd hand Journe).

This said if you can't wait and it would make you happy despite some missing items (really the cloth and these accessories are *not* important) go for it.

I am no expert, but it seems that if you don’t have

 By: Darron : August 27th, 2023-17:07
Some inkling of connection with a boutique, it would be unlikely to get a piece at msrp.

1000% true; I haven’t owned a Journe so no connection with any boutique.

 By: Lankysudanese : August 27th, 2023-17:17
I used to visit with the the LA boutique staff frequently back in 2015-2017, but the staff have been replaced and I moved thousands of miles away.

"I would generally not buy used but if I do, it has to be below MSRP"

 By: Lankysudanese : August 27th, 2023-17:48
. I lived by this rule for 20 years. And i never wanted to break it. But a neighbor and close friend has slowly influenced me to consider "changing my ways". after all, this particular proportion was being offered at 7% above MSRP+VAT

Hi again Hussam

 By: ChristianDK : August 27th, 2023-16:19
…sorry for being late to the thread. I just read through it and don’t have much to add from what has been said.
It sounds like you have already established that the watch is not stolen and that manufacture warranty will cover you. Condition is satisfactory. Those are the most important points.
Regarding the missing items. The cloth. I’m sure they will give you one for free when you visit a boutique. The USB only holds a copy of the instructions manual that you have received in print. You Can download that exact file from the webpage. I don’t see any value in that. I also have the suspicion that this is an older production date due to the box (which is correct) and the printed manual. A Journe boutique will be able to provide you with the production year if you have the serial number.

I don’t see any problem except one. The golden rule: If in doubt- don’t do it. It’s just a rule that I have followed since I got burned a few times. It has to be a pleasure to get an expensive watch and that means feeling good about the process also. So I don’t want to advise you to go ahead or drop it,  For that matter. Just simply that you need to feel comfortable with it all before doing any deal.
Good luck.

I have to admit that as soon as I read about the cloth😅 I had to find out where did I leave my Laurent Ferrier Sport Cloth that comes with the watch..

 By: christianch : August 27th, 2023-16:46
and I found it in my bag 😅 I had a chance to buy a Journe in 2015 from the boutique (I think the same model) but I passed and today is pretty much impossible. That's fine but I wouldn't pay over MSRP no matter what, no matter which brand. This is rule #1.

that's been my rule for 20 years, but a first-owner journe proposition under warranty for another 14 months and at a mere 7% premium (above MSRP+VAT) makes one consider breaking the rules

 By: Lankysudanese : August 27th, 2023-17:49

I understand, the premium is not high but..you do have some other gorgeous pieces in the pipeline so I wouldn't worry if you don't have a Journe in the short term

 By: christianch : August 28th, 2023-03:09

Always appreciate your input, Christian.

 By: Lankysudanese : August 27th, 2023-17:22
Believe it or not, the collector himself gave me the same advice: “buying an expensive luxury watch has to be a complete experience, so if this is going to be an incomplete experience, don’t buy it from me”
So, I’m ok with that. However, it’s hard to come by second hand platinum journes in my locale, and I don’t travel much. And I won’t be buying any watch sight-unseen anymore. Which is why I was second-guessing moving on this piece
I’ll keep you updated
Quick question: is it normal procedure for an AD to have struggled to sell a pre-2017 platinum CS (based on the warranty card) until late 2021. Anywhere else, it would have flown off the shelf by late 2020 at the latest.

I think your gut feeling is what you need to follow. Not our opinions.

 By: ChristianDK : August 27th, 2023-20:15
And I agree. Never, ever buy unseen. It have been burned so badly in the past as well. I know how it feels. So, no it will not be easy to find an other one.

Regarding your question: No, not normal at all. On the other hand sometimes I have heard of rare and incredible finds. Was it a retailer off the beaten path?

Good luck 🍀
