I enjoy having this SD to compare to the SDDS. (Although some have already done here, and especially better than me) Side by side, I laugh, thinking back to all these comments I have read on the forums for all these years, "the SD is too big" "SD is unbalanced" "this is the version of bodybuilded Submariner "" This is the submariner in the extreme " In short, I will not comment Come on, up to photos

 

 

Well, the 16600 has lived (it apparently swam a lot in the Gulf of Ajaccio) but its case is always thick, finally, is when even a small player face to his "mother"




The HEV is in titanium on the SD, in 904L steel on the SDDS




Here, no steel ring doped with nitrogen to face the 3900m, we will stop at 1220m The dial is t <25 with indexes still white, but the pearl begins yellow, the insert has blue reflections I had a hard time to photograph ;(


Glass has taken a few blows over the years, but no trace of oxidation on the flange or elsewhere. On my shelves, N3XXXXXX corresponds to late 1991-early 1992, but the punched papers are dated 1996. I have a thought for the AD that no longer exists



93160, pierced horns, extendable "small" everything is to dive again and again, although I think it will suffer a little "toilet" I think a complete revision, change glass, the insert and polishing, and you?

Great side by side pictures of two splendid watches.

I personally love my SDDS and do not find it is too big, gives my wrist a lot of exercise.

Clean up the SD, well I will let the experts give their opinion. It does not look to bad in the pictures.

Thanks for the comparisons.  As far as service as long as the watch is keeping reasonable time I would not service the watch.  As far as the cosmetics I would say the same.  The watch looks good and it is a tool watch.  Maybe one day when you pass it on you can refresh it but no need now. 

As  far as the date differential between the serial and the punched papers it is common that a watch sits in a an AD's window or safe and sold a few years later.  Generally this gap is about two or so years but I would not worry about if they match you are good.

From this perspective the balance is questionable.  Overall it works but this is an interesting take.

....It should be more thick, but the engineersof Rolex have manages to "reduce" the case so that it has resisted pressure from 3900metres, thanks to the steel ring doped with nitrogen.
Without this ring, it would have been more thick to get at that depth.
(I had seen the diagrams and patent filings on a French forum, but I can not find anymore, sorry)

But the thing is that the DSSD case, while getting bigger and bigger, lost a bit of its original balance, IMO.

... appears smooth because it's the case "Bettarini"(on the PAM112) which is more elegant than the 1950, or that of Egiziano.
For 116660, after, it's a matter of taste ...

The 1950 case has something really strong and sensual, at he same time, which the Bettarini case ( Pre Vendome ) doesn't have. More square, not the same elegance, IMO.

But to each his own.

If it weren't for the newer and better bracelet of the DSSD I would have a hard time getting a proper fit. The heft is not as noticeable once it's sized correctly. I cannot get a perfect fit on the SD bracelet but since it's a smaller piece, it's bearable. They are similiar, yet so different.

... ESE 2A!!  Interesting pictures, to visualize the differences among these great watches.

I have mixed emotions about the DSSD. For one side, I recognize  it is a magnificent example of the capacity of Rolex of producing a extraordinary, super tough watch.
Everything in this watch oozes quality: design, bracelet clasp, high finish, etc.

By the other hand, I never could fall in love with it.
I bought mine at ends of 2009, one of the first few which arrived to my Country.

 I tried once and again to get the "rapport" with it, with no luck. I always put on my wrist, with the hope that with use, would came love.

I repeated the trials during 2009 and 2010, and always felt it too heavy, too big, and raising too high on my wrist for my pleasure (not for my comfort, I mean, pleasure of wearing it). I even kept the transparent protective plastics on its case, thinking to make a deal for another watch.

Then in June 2011, I finaly found my pleasure from this beautiful watch: during one of his weekly visits to my home, my son saw it sitting in my watch box.

He handled it a bit, tried on his wrist, and expressed how much he liked it.

After he left for his home, I remained with the watch in my hands for a few minutes.
I quickly had decided it!

I put  tags and red seal back to the watch and returned it to its original box. Put the box in a presentation paper bag, and waited for my son birthday celebration a few weeks later.

My son´s face when receiving the DSSD as his birthday present, was all I needed to confirm that this is a fantastic watch!

...It's a beautiful story, and the SDDS is not lost for every body

... it happens with many watch users, and different watch brands. Sometimes seems that a watch is not made for us.

I keep enjoying the DSSD on my son´s wrist though. It´s another way of enjoying a great watch!
