Daytona ref 16520
visited one of the AD who is participating in Rolex's certified pre-own program today. they have a 1994, black dial Daytona asking for US $31k. the upside of buying a pre-owned watch through this program is it has been throughly inspected, serviced, and guaranteed by the crown.

This is their certified pre owned from Rolex? I have no experience but if the watch has service paperwork from Rolex that is wonderful.

You didn't say why you want it or what you want it for. Prices vary widely based on rarity/condition/collectibilty so important to know what you're getting from that CPO example.
You can spend more than that on a safe queen NOS unserviced unpolished perfect example with box and papers or a fraction of that price for a middle of the production beater to wear everyday with abandon. Early dials cost more, last year of production costs more, patrizzi, etc, etc. Just because it's cpo doesn't mean it hasn't been parts swapped or polished to a pebble. It would help to understand more specifics of what kind of 16520 you are looking for and if you don't know then this is a great opportunity to get nerdy before you pull the trigger.
I bought one this spring, prices ranged from about $17k to $40k. I looked at a dozen or so examples, prices and condition all over the place, patrizzi sub dials, inverted six, papers, case back sticker, service papers, etc and one really needs to see multiple in person to start to get a sense of comparative condition. Some were definitely not in great shape but you would never know without having seen a bunch for comparison. For me, I wanted one to wear, not to collect. That meant luminova dial and as close to new condition as possible without paying extra for boxes, papers, etc so not the most collectible but a perfect throwback to the watch I had always wanted when these were new.

so much to learn. I have always wanted a Daytona, for more than 30 years. I finally realized that my only route to one is via pre-owned. the main attraction of buying from Rolex cpo program is its warranty on genuineness. I haven no specifc likes or dislikes of this model, it just so happens that they have one available (the other is a 2019 asking for US$37k). I wear my watches 😊

Same! I remember when the Zenith Daytona was announced and wanted one back then but decided to go a little more conservative and only now had the chance to come back around.
It's a modern enough Rolex you probably won't get a bad watch from any respectable dealer, CPO or not, but I think you'll feel better about the purchase when you know exactly what you bought in relation to the other 16520s out there.
Some thoughts. The bezel is hard to refinish and is nla along with the tritium dials. Check the sharpness of the numbers and the profile around the edge of the bezel and make sure the dial is what you want. Frankly, I'd be fine with a service dial and hands as long as the price matched the loss of originality. The case is quite sculpted too and I've seen some bad polish jobs on the cases - warping in the reflections on the case sides, uneven width and profile of lugs or crown guards, and uneven brushing on the tops of the lugs. Can always service the movement but hard to get metal back once lost.

My one regret is I was a little too focused in my search. While I was making the rounds I wish I had also looked at white dial 16520s and gold 16528s. Now I'm tempted to check out other versions but need to hit up the dealers again...
