Here is one, a 1675 Gilt, brown dial ( credit picture: Analog and Shift ) which I find interesting:
How do you find it? It has character and soul, but too much?

That kind of dial has appeal
and "value" only in Rolex world....
and that's for sure one of many charms that brand has

The unpredictability of patina formation and the uniqueness of each vintage rolex. But too potent for me

For Rolex fans, "heavenly patina" - for most others, "damaged dial"
There is a book called "Men are from Mars, women are from Venus"
The watch world version is "Purists are from Mars, vintage Rolex collectors are from Venus"
2 very different worlds.
My eyes have not been affected by the vintage Rolex bug so to me, whether this dial is on this GMT or on a vintage IWC or Heuer, it all looks the same (and to be a gentleman I will simply say to me this is not patina and not a good thing for me).
Love the bezel though, that has a lot of charm

A Tropical dial is hard to judge as the can go from extreme/damaged to very pleasant and charming.
It is a personal thing like a new pair of shoes vs a well worn pair. Some well worn shoes are ready for the bin while others major brands try to replicate the lived in feel without holes in the soles.
So you must consider Tropical as a generic term that has a very broad range of interpretation and yes value. And also consider tropical different to color change which is a uniform color vs a leather feel.
But yes Tropical is often misused to call a damaged dial something other than what it is. And in damaged i mean flaky, unreadable test, damaged / missing lume and all round stinky.

Vintage certainly can have a lot of charm
But would you hang this on your wall:

For me a vintage watch has to be in a superior condition to consider buying it. If it is too messed up it looses all its appeal (to me).

Of course, a better condition is important, but I guess it all depends on...
