The answer to your question is entirely subjective, as it depends on what makes "collecting" worthwhile to the individual.

If you like the Yachtmaster, who cares what a dealer thinks of it?

Watches are unlikely to prove a useful financial investment, but they can certainly provide other kinds of gratification, such as reliable service, pride of ownership, fulfillment of "passion," the illusion of social status, or simply the pleasure of handling it, setting it, or looking at it (though some of these look crazy to others).

The one that will bring you joy is the one to get.

I never understand how stainless steel can be "worthy" of collection, it really a bet against the future demand market.  A better "worthwhile" collection would need to comprise of more uncommon pieces or pricier option of the common models.

With SS models, you just won't know if it'll be the next big iconic model that the vintage market go crazy about, or will it just be another dud (yes it does happen, my dad bought a boy-size Rolex back in the days when it was hot in HK, there's basically no demand for it now).

Below is a list of my pick - 

Daytona: Platinum with chocolate ceramic bezel - rare & expensive precious metal
GMT-Master: White Gold Blue-Red ceramic bezel "Pepsi" - precious metal with iconic bezel
Submariner: Two Tone Black dial/bezel or even the gold with blue dial/bezel - precious metal/rare dial color
Skydweller: Any option. The fluted bezel is functional (to set the 24-hour time). These are largely unknown models which I think will be sought after once it gets obsolete/new update due to a lack of attention for it now. Aren't we all human?

The picks are of my personal opinion. Looking forward to others' opinions on this!

I don't exactly know how many Rolex made, but probably, a prudent guess,  let's say 50 000 , which wouldn't surprise me. 50, 000 is not what I call rare. 

It won't be rare. If it is just a one or two years production, then this is another story.

There are some watches that one could argue are more likely to appreciate in value than others. Equally, there are some watches that one enjoys wearing much more than others. If those two frameworks cross over, then you have a hit. So often, though, it is impossible to evaluate what will or what will not appreciate in value...hence one is left with only one variable where one can be sure to control....our own personal taste. So, in your shoes, I would look at the list you have and select the watch that you most want to wear. But I guess you have been told the same advice in different ways before....

Actually, I have not had much advice from people that I know at all, most of my friends only knows Rolex and Cartier. I am the one usually giving them advice when they want to buy one or two to wear and keep. I am still learning to buy sensibly instead of by simply just the look or the brand of a watch. And in the watchprosite forum there are lots of things and advices that I can consider and learn.

......the investment that you really need to consider is one in your enjoyment. Think of a watch as an investment in your pleasure...in a similar way to a holiday. The latter, of course, depreciates to zero very quickly. A watch can and often does depreciate....but it does so over a much longer period. If you love your watch and it gives you great pleasure, then its monetary value becomes less of an issue. Of course, nobody wants to throw money away....but when we go on vacation, we don't evaluate it as money being thrown away. Rather, it is looked at as money invested in our wll-being and happiness.


Looking at a watch in a similar way is not a bad idea.

Some watches have "investment" appeal. but within modern Rolex, my guess is that few if any have that persona.

So, I'd say just buy the one you like best and you'll probably be OK if you decide to sell/upgrade down the road. It's doubtful any of the modern Rolexes will be collectible like some from the past are, but if I was forced to speculate I'd say Deep Blue (for relative rarity) and the Platinum Daytona (come on, it's a Daytona...in platinum) have the best shot.

Buy the watch you like as Baron said consider it as investment in pleasing you and second also as noted below most Rolex watch retain there value as they are sold at their retail price not discounted all over the place 25-35% off as do many other brands.
