Rolex Day Date 40
It's funny how on one hand you could very easily state that a Rolex DD is ostentatious. And it is. On the other hand it's a great feeling watch.
It feels solid. Really solid. It feels like it will never ever break down and that the first service is at least one decade away. Maybe two.
Before it I was worried that the sheer weight of the thing would bother me a lot. It has bothered me with Panerai's in the past. Even my IWC occasionally feels too heavy. But for some strange and illogical reason the weight of this Day Date gives a feeling of trust. Of confidence. One is always aware that a rock solid watch is on the wrist. Something like that anyway....
One thing is for sure: I'm enjoying the hell out of it at the moment. And I'm guessing that that is exactly the strongest point of Rolex. Their watches are solid. Even if they are by far not the most interesting watches out there they do make you feel good. And everyone owning one knows it.

You know that very well, I love vintage Rolex a lot, but I can also appreciate moderns.
The thing, with Rolex, is when you put it on your wrist, you close the buckle, you feel and hear the characteristic " Dong " which reminds you the feeling of a door from a german car, the immediate perception of quality. Well made, built as rocks, they... rock.

And I know more people who say exactly the same. But since I bought my first Rolex (Milgauss) I realized that that was a stupid thought.
The Explorer II that I recently acquired had been sitting in a box for 12 years. Took it out of the box and strapped it on and it ticked like a Swiss watch ;-)
That's Rolex.
And no: a Rolex is not an Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe or Breguet and certainly no Independent but they probably are the most solid mechanical watches on the market.
Question: Are they??

The only complaints I have heard are from two female friends who have problems with their Oyster Perpetual and Datejust (losing time and power reserve) but both refuse to service them because the watch will be gone for a few weeks.

I own the 36mm in platinum but I have also tried the 40mm. Very solid as you suggest and after a few days any other watch feels too light or puny in comparison. The platinum day date is discreet yet a true statement. Enjoy it! Christian

Yes, many Rolex models really catch people's eye, especially the precious metals. But no matter the model, you feel you've got a solid and sturdy machine on your wrist, that's for sure. It took my wife a while before she became comfortable wearing her DJ on an every day basis.
Recently tried on a new DD40 at a local jeweler, it's a beauty.
