Half hour later he gives me this:

Screen is tiny at 4 inches...

The big fuss is the color...GOLD!

Not as gaudy as I thought it would be.  The back and side are a brushed finish with a shiny polish on the bevel...

Buttons are also in the matching gold color:

Will post impressions on this thoughtful and generous gift (thanks buddy!    ) once I get to mess with the hyped up fingerprint sensor and new A7 processor.

Did you update to iOS 7?  They released another update ( iOS 7.02) the other day.  On my iPad3 it's still laggy but slightly better.  iTunes is not as wacky as before.  What's wierd is some people are reporting visual disturbances with the new ui.

Funnily enough a lot of my female friends keep their phones in their bra (don't ask me..!) on nights out so they would have to ensure it is the correct way around

I'm using one for two or more months and I'm very happy with it. 

I've always avoided phones this big... but they are all doing it so I might jump into the big phones and try it out.

The S4 Mini is not just a 4.3" version of the 5" S4.  The Mini has a lower resolution qHD screen with a slower processor and less RAM.  The camera on the S4 is 13mp vs the 8mp on the Mini.  Some of the cool TouchWiz features are not found on the Mini.  I personally like the larger screen phones but some may find it too big.  The S4 is thin so it helps.

My thoughts exactly as yours.  I was expecting a over the top pimped out tacky looking super shiny gold plate but to my eyes it's more of a elegant shade of Champagne color.  The bevel polish to break up the brushed side and back was a good idea.  For those looking for a iPhone that want a luxurious look, IMO the designers who were involved with the gold nailed it.  I can see why it's in such demand with people going so crazy for this Gold edition.

I enjoy Apple products.  I have loved all of my iPhones.  Currently, I am on an iPhone 4S.  I saw the 5S the day it hit the stores, but didn't buy one.  It's a great phone, and I would certainly buy one if my current phone died or disappeared, but I didn't see it having enough new features to warrant an "elective" upgrade.  The new camera sounds like the best enhancement to me.

Having played with a friend's Samsung Galaxy S4, I feel tempted to wait for the rumored larger-screen iPhones due out next year, as a large screen would definitely enhance my experience using my phone for web surfing, emailing, and video viewing.  On the other hand (so to speak), I may just go out and get a 5S because 2 years is too long to own a phone.

I totally agree with you that if you do a lot of movies, tv, youtube, or even browsing the web the larger screen makes a huge difference.  I haven't had any issues carrying the S4 but I also prefer a removable battery, microSD slot, and the multi windows function that the iPhone doesn't have.  The even larger Samsung Note 3 isn't out yet but if I had to upgrade to something right now or relatively soon I would probably get one.  The Note 3 has so many cool features!

Did you update to iOS 7.02 on your 4S?  Have you noticed any lag or force closes on any apps?

I never upgrade until the general public has had a couple months with a major revision to an OS or application.  I've got a stable iOS now, so I'm in no rush.

I'm rather locked into Apple products, though not absolutely.  I use a Mac and have a huge library of music in iTunes.  Also, the S4 felt a bit fragile...

The iPhone is a metal build vs the plastic on the S4. The HTC ONE has a nice solid feeling design.

My 4S is happy and feels like a new phone. Battery seems to drain a little faster but I can't quantify it.

Looks like you updated your iPad as well, cool that it's working out for you on the 4S.  If you haven't already done so they just released the iOS 7.02 update.

Thank you for sharing your positive experience.  Perhaps I won't wait so long to upgrade.   I have both an iPhone 4S and an iPad Mini.

Battery life on the S4 is great and the bonus is that it's removable!  Factory is 2600 mAh but aftermarket higher capacity ones are available.  I just got the iPhone 5S so I'll report back in a week or so on usage.

4" is just too damn small now.  It looks funny when people are using their large fingers trying to type out an email on such a small screen.  I hope Apple releases a phone the same size as the Samsung S4 next year.  If they do, they will definitely grab share away from Samsung.  Having said that, I would even consider switching over  at some point but that still is a small possibility but at least a possibility indeed!

I really like the Galaxy Note 3, will have to play with one when it comes out and see if its way too big or not.  From my limited knowledge of iOS you can't roll back from 7 to iOS6.  On Android I can do a full backup and restore.  I hope they update and fix some of the lag on the older iPad.

As for switching I hope Windows gets their act together, I kinda like the ui.  I'll be at CES in January so we'll see what new toys will come out!  Of course I will post from there on TimeOut forum.
