During my recent visit to New York City, I finally had the chance to walk the High Line, a public park created on an abandoned, elevated rail line 30 feet in the air on the lower west side of Manhatten. The creation of this park is both a success of grassroots community organization and 21st century design. I would daresay that this is the new Central Park for the 21st century.
The park starts above 30the St. and heads south, snaking between buildings.
Access is through a series of stairways and elevators at intersecting streets.
Several new buildings adjacent to the High Line have been built. This is a residential tower designed by the Los Angeles based architect, Neil Denari.
The park has a number of areas that allow views of the city.
There are also a number of areas for events and just plain people watching...
There are places where the park cuts through buildings, creating places to eat, exercise and even see films...
I think that the most amazing experience is being in the air and seeing this wild landscape against the gritty New York buildings.
Hope that you enjoyed the stroll!

I think the High Line project is one of the most inspired bits of urban improvement to have hit America in ages. What a wonderful use of space! The design is quite thoughtful and it seems like a perfect oasis in the middle of the city. Very nice! Hope you enjoyed your trip to NYC.
I was there shortly after it opened to the public and was quite impressed by it. What a great way to reclaim an unused space. Unfortunately (or possibly fortunately) for me it wasn't until I was back in Los Angeles that I heard about some of the "shows" couples were putting on in the windows of the Standard Hotel. A quick google search for "Standard Hotel NYC High Line" should provide news articles describing what was happening.
