I love this movie as well as almost all the ones directed by Kurosawa.

Other favorites:

Apocalypse Now, and Tora!Tora!Tora!  ( I guess that is why I'm in the military)

. . . . now I've got a question for you, Elliot, but I have to digress with a prelude: some 25 years ago I was hangin' at Barney's Beanery with my cousin Eric, our pal Marius, and Marius's roommate, who's name is long forgotten.  We were having brews and chili when out of the blue the roommate yells out, "Hey Seymour!"  In the back of the joint a guy playing pool turns around and our nameless drinking buddy tells Seymour Cassells that his mom had worked with him on a movie.  Seymour comes over to our table and we have a conversation about Hollywood and his career.  I asked him if there was a part that he really wanted that he didn't get, and his reply was that he was going to be Christopher Walken's Russian roulette handler in the Deerhunter, but for some reason another actor got the part.  I've always wondered about that because the character in the film was clearly French, and it's hard to imagine Seymour performing with a French accent.  Can you shed any light on this dim story from the distant past?  Curiously, Art

 

....that was (I don't even want to count) 29(!) years ago. but alas i am in post-production and was not privy to any casting or production goings-on. my apologies. but you're right, Seymour Cassel doing a French accent doesn't seem a likely casting opportunity.

It'll be Kurusawa's Ran, The Deer Hunter, The Samurai Trilogy, Angel Heart and The Marathon Man.

Not forgetting Michael Mann's Heat. Excellent play between De Niro and Pacino in that diner.

It all depends on what mood I'm in

I'm a huge film fan and have many that I like, but couldn't possibly pick a favorite.

I just watched The Conformist (Bertolucci) the other night which was quite good.

I already listed my three favorites - "Black Narcissus", "Last Holiday", and "Tales of Manhattan" - but I could easily add a few more: "Blow Up", "Captain's Paradise", "Lawrence of Arabia", "Bullitt", "The Deerhunter",  "My Dinner with Andre", and almost all of Errol Flynn's movies.  Let's save favorite actors for another thread . . . cordially, Art 

Tough to beat a good Steve Mcqueen film too.

I have not one, but 3 all-time favorites.  They are "The Wind and the Lion" with Sean Connery and Candice Bergman;  "Warlord" with Charleston Heston and Rosemary Forsyth; and "Man Who Would Be King" with Sean Connery (again) and Michael Cain.  Watched all 3 many, many times.

I have the remastered version of Casablanca, and the lighting and camera work shows up beautifully.  

There are conversations between Bergmann and Bogart where the camera switches between them.  He's lit in stark, high contrast; she's lit in soft, low contrast.   It's a wonderful effect.  A friend who works in film post-production doing colour and image balance (no idea what the job is called), said they wouldn't be allowed to do that now as the ideal is to go for consistency and uniformity of lighting quality.  Shame - it's this sort of touch that really adds something.  I love old Hollywood B&W.

My current favourite modern (everything is relative) film is Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain .  There are evenings when I need something harmless and plain straightforward daft, and this fits the bill perfectly.

I'm slowly introducing my wife to Asiatic conema, but it's an uphill struggle.  I may try Seven Samouri.

besides Humphrey Bogart are absolutely great. Claude Rains, Ingrid Bergman, Peter Lorre, Conrad Veith have played so well in Casablanca.

If I am well informed the movie was turned within a few weeks only at Warner Brother's. The piano of "Sam, play it again' is still to be seen in the ateliers of Warner's.

This movie is part of the patrimony of men forever.
