Omega

Hello PuristS,

I have been lurking here for a while and meaning to get arround to posting an introductory post.  I am from Melbourne Australia and my interest in watches is mostly focused on vintage Omegas but encompasses diverse other things as well.  I have a small, humble collection that I hope to grow along a broad general theme. 

I very much admire the depth of knowledge displayed here on PuristSPro and enjoy the different tone/culture here  from that of other forums.  While I remain active on other forums I hope that I can contribute when I have something to offer to the discourse here.

Here is my collection in overview:

From left to right I have my everyday beater, a SMP300 ref 2531.80, a Railmaster XXL which is my one 'new' or 'current range' Omega, a cal. 911 flightmaster from 1971 and my newly acquired SM200 ref 166.091 also from 1971.  I am particularly fascinated by Omega's pilot line models from the 1970's and would love to acquire more of these over time particularly a ref. 166.0093 and or a ref 176.004.  This recent acquisition came with original box, instruction manual and purchase receipt.     



I think these two make a great pair.  Here are the others in a little more detail.  The Railmaster XXL, which many people feel is too big but I like just fine.  When on occasion the topic of watch size comes up you can expect me to chime in with an impassioned defence of classically styled but contemporary sized watches:

This is my Dad's 1966 Seamaster 30.  It was a wedding present from my Mum to my Dad and I inherited it when he passed away.  Probably one of the reasons I got into Omega's in particular when I developed an interest in watches.
 


I love the patina on the dial and even though it is GF not solid gold it is of huge sentimental value to me.

Here is my flighty.  I don't know what it is about the cal. 911 flightmaster but it has just captured my attention ever since I got into watches. 



As you can probably see, I like my watches with a bit of 'wabi' or signs of use.  I am fascinated by watches that were made for a utilitarian purpose but have ascended to a collectable status due to there inherent design quality.  Yes it would have been easier to say "I like tool watches" but I think that is an often over and misused term. 

Anyway it is good to finally be able post here and I look forward to contributing where I can.

Hi Zac, and welcome to the forum.

That's a great collection you have there, and nice to hear some of the stories behind them. Thanks for sharing.

There are actually quite a few purists in Melbourne - if you look over in the HoMe forum, you can see some photos from a get together just last week.

Great collection you have there.I told you about the PSM dinner last week. Grumio and I both attended the diner.Read AndrewD ( HoMe moderator ) report and view his photos.

Although I cannot be meant with the high degree of watch expertise found on this site, I also enjoy being taught, entertained and enlightened here !

Nice collection....  Welcome to the forum.  Zac, you really do not have to wait  " ... I can contribute when I have something to offer to the discourse here."  Your more then welcome to post a comment , thought etc...   The forum is a global village of like minded collectors and enthusiasts. 

I would be interested if you prefer the caliber 911 Flightmaster to the caliber 910 Flightmaster... ?

I guess I'm a little gun shy to go sprouting off ideas among this esteemed company but give me a week or to and I get over it and start pontificating.  But seriously thanks for making me welcome and congrats on a fine community you have here.

When it comes to the cal. 911 versus cal. 910 flightmaster I come down on the side of the cal. 911 mostly for cosmetic reasons but also for some pragmatic and historic reasons.  like the case shape of the 145.036 over the 145.013.  That is not to take away from the cal. 910, I think it is great and love it, it would be great to own one one day (particularly the solid gold version ... I know I'm dreaming) but I like the constant second subdial at 9 o'clock of the cal. 911 - letting me know the watch is running - and the association with Apollo-Soyuz and Alexi Leonev.    At risk of sounding mad I made up this small framed montage and hung it on the wall:



Which in a sense goes toward addressing your post the other day about re: "we can't buy a new watch every day" in that it is a small way of prolonging my sense of fascination with the watches I already have.  I'm a sucker for a bit of unpaid historical endorsement, Leonev and flighmaster, Cousteau and the PloProf among others etc.

In defence of myself I also made up similar ones for my mates who own a PloProf and a Omega Bullhead respectively.

i really love your Railmaster XXL. i've tried one myself and on my 7.5 inch wrist it looks fine (Andy, if you read this please confirm it looks fine   ), i've just got to find the money to buy one. most of my other Omegas date from 1964 exactly for reasons which become clear or you already know about if you've been lurking here awhile.

the seamaster 30 is also a great watch. i have one myself, but yours has an extra reason to be on your wrist. what am i saying??, they are all great watches.

i havent been left any watches mainly because my dad's still alive and kicking, but i'm the first in a line of watch collectors in the family. my son loves his speedmaster i bought him for his 21st birthday and wouldnt be surprised if he didnt buy more as he gets older.

welcome again and lets see some in depth reviews of these great pieces, especially the XXL.

These are among my Omegas. Glad to have you here!

I always enjoy your posts.  It would appear we are in similar territory with our taste.  I love the applied numerals on that Seamaster 600.  That is very  nice.  My flightmaster doesn't get much time on the mesh since the SM200 arrived but  seeing your there reminds me what a great combo they make.

this is a very friendly place with vast knowledge. in melbourne you have access to good omega parts via marcus from watchco and a very good military watchmaker in phil gore. and a few other good watchmakers for vintage as well. i´m in coffs harbour; half way between sydney and brisbane. feel free to contact me any time for help, if needed. i hope to organize an vintage watch meeting later in the year for exchanging news, show and swap watches and make friends in australia. there will be a few rolex collectors as well and maybe 1-2  vintage watchmakers. there are many watchcollectors in australia, but no coordination. in fact we should have a watchfair here as well. maybe sydney because it´s central, but any other ideas very welcome ! in europe they have a watchfair somewhere every weekend.......; we can have one or two per year ? kind regards . achim

You are definitely amongst friends with that nice collection of Omega's. And always great to welcome another 'local' from this side of the world. Looking forward to seeing more, but in the meantime here is a Seamaster, Ref. 166.003, Cal. 562 from 1966 also in gold cap, to welcome you.
