I think both are alright but if I have to vote, the 38mm wins by a slight difference.
I think a 42, you can carry it with your wrist. 40 would be great. But what makes you happy is most important. 😁
7 inches around. Personally i like smaller watches. In my collection i don't go over 40mm.😉

My wrist is 7 inches as well. My feeling is also that I never go over 40 mm. But after trying on that 42 mm blue yesterday, I am seriously considering it! 🤩

Size wise

You are right the latest generation looks better, then I think 42mm is better for you
I could argue for both! In pictures I know the 42 might look bigger (I tried it too and took pictures of it and always found my picture gave an impression o bit different from the real life experience)…
I have the 38mm copper and I like it but in my case I I choose the dial color first . I love thé 38mm and may get a 42 at some point…

There is a 38mm I like quite a bit but just can’t pull the trigger unfortunately because just looks too small
On your wrist, I think 42 mm is better fit. Especially in dark blue when it tends to make a watch look smaller
42 for your wrist size (and from what I can see) looks good.
But, for me the 38 looks more suave, and the the 38 proportions are much more appealing.
