Many sports greats like to collect different watches, even worn watches during competition. Which watch worn by sports greats made you impressed?
For me, Richard Mille worn by Rafael Nadal definitely, as this is one of the world’s lightest tourbillon. So that players can wear a watch that is as light as possible while playing matches.
The weight of the watch makes no difference...
...the players are paid millions to wear them, that is all that matters.

I’m honestly unimpressed by any ‘greats’ sponsoring watches, or at least the watches that I would buy…Patek’s no-ambassador philosophy is the winner here (basically, you buy a Patek in order to look like…yourself, not someone else! ;-)
But if I had to stick to Richard Mille and one of its ambassadors, then let me go all in with this football player!😉

I agree with you completely....
but when a collaboration yields something truly hyper-specific, at the highest-end of horology (like the Nadal-RM watches), I feel that there is plenty enough substance (both technical and design) to make the effort worthwhile without any cynicism! I had no idea about the O. Beckham collab and story! Cheers, Filip
To be honest I don’t follow football, but that was pretty interesting when it became public! ;-)) I guess certain brands also lend themselves more naturally to collaborations (e.g., RM also as a form of technical demonstration)…
However, I generally just can’t find it appealing at a high level. It actually seems common, quite reasonably, for the top brands in several areas not to have these reps/ambassadors (Patek for watches, Ferrari for cars, I believe also Hermès for accessories/lifestyle, etc.)... Arguably mine is a “Purist” approach, but I’m genuinely unmoved by what all of these ‘greats’ (some truly so in their field!) would wear😄 Cheers.

One of the most obnoxious ones is indisputably Clooney and Omega which has been going on 'forever', and similar ones like Kate Winslet for Longines, Theron/Pitt/Travolta and others for Breitling etc........
Definitely, or even Rolex (which is a brand I admire for many reasons), whose ambassador list seems to include virtually everyone on this planet….But again, I think we are in very different market segments there😉👍 Cheers.

Hype/success aside of their Patek sales, including the reference whose name may not be spoken (on which T legitimately capitalized in terms of image), T is “just” an AD for Patek, even if it clearly enjoys a close relationship since the 1800’s…
I didn’t even know Beyoncé and Jay-Z were specifically involved with watches for T (I really don’t follow these things), but of course I recall Jay-Z immediately letting the world know he was one of the “cool 169” last year (same for Di Caprio, etc.). For sure T — which I would honestly characterize as a mid-level player in its own field (jewelry) — has the right to hire whomever they want as *their own* ambassadors, and it’s not surprising they do so in that position😉👍

It actually makes me see Patek Philippe as a watch for a crowd I don’t want to identify with. I hope Jay Z is a lovely individual with a pleasant disposition in real life, but in the latest Tiffany advertisements he looks like a battle hardened gangster in some of those photos which might be the image the photographers were trying to achieve. I don’t know…. It didn’t resonate with me. But I understand it may be that macho image he’s trying to protect that resonates with his demographic.

I do like the cool and meaningful design collaborations done by Bulgari with Japanese architects. Those were done well.

I was really surprised Vacheron Constantin (my favorite brand to compare to Patek Philippe) had Ora Ito as a brand ambassador. While I like most of Ora Ito’s work, I was surprised of the move by VC. Why do they need it? They know they’re amongst the best already. Brands at the VC and PAtek Philippe level should beat to their own drum, and not follow this recent phenomenon of having brand ambassadors. Set your own trends VC. Don’t follow this new trend.
None. for me seeing a great high-profile sportsman with a pumped watch is a turn off.
I ooze PR and nothing else. It is so "bold" to such level that not only it turns me off, but I also don't "trust" the story of reliability they are trying to demonstrate and make me sceptic of its true handling on the field.
I do like a real man's watch on a sportsman wrist when you really see it on a normal life photos.
Having said that, I'm "on the list" for the Titanium Yacht Master worn by Ben Ainslie , that would fit me perfectly.

There are some celebrities who wear their own watches in their films. I find that better than a celebrity endorsement.

The word 'heros' is such an abused term nowadays. So tell me, how is someone playing sports for millions in currency a hero??? Seriously, i'm curious what they have done to honestly deserve being called a hero.

Sports have been elevated to an art form. And the athletes are the artists. As have chefs. Clothes designers. Watchmakers. Even car designers. People need to market themselves. PR and media is all the rage.

I guess the definition of hero is just very wide these days. But it more than likely means just someone who is famous. Heck. Hero might mean a famous person with bad behavior one day at this rate. A big percentage of the famous people out there are poorly behaved. I know I’m not perfect, but at least I don’t tap my feet loudly and heavily for nearly an entire airplane flight!

I love and admire a watch for its own sake. Or not.
Having a celebrity and/or ambassador wear a watch doesn't affect me at all.
I often even notice the opposite instead of the desired effect on me: an ambassador connection with a watch brand might turn me off immediately.

it depends on the cooperation format
I think some watches’ cooperation is meaningful. Yes, some athletes will be the official endorsement only, but some of the cooperation also record the remarkable moments or memories for the athletes, like the spirit of never giving up.
One of the examples could be Hublot King Power ‘Black Mamba’. Some athletes also will involve in the design of the watch, so I think it depends on the cooperation format.
