How would you compare Aventurine and Enamel in the way it is used on the moonphase of the JLC Reverso Nonantième : the gold plate has stars of different sizes sticking out of the "bath" of enamel (see photo below). The result could be rather similar.
I would love to see both side by side.

Aventurine would add greater thickness, since it needs the metal substrate as a backing for a dial. And the aventurine itself needs to be of a certain thickness or else it won't withstand shock and vibration. So for the sake of reliability and simplicity, the better way would be to do the blue enamel. JLC probably has done a lacquer or a COLD enamel technique (rather than the hot grand feu enamel) as the cold technique is easier to achieve and a reasonable application for this part. Although I have to admit, I don't know for sure what JLC has done in this specific case.

Looking at your photos reminded me of aventurine dials and Rolls-Royce car ceilings! The world's most expensive car company also has a car ceiling with a "starry night" display using fiber optic lights!

...probably not what watch manufacturers are using, but it does exist in a natural state.

But it doesn't have the "starry night" feature that this glass aventurine has.

But this could end up being dated like the lapis lazuli dials of the 1970s

I still stare at Piaget timepieces with those dials every now and then.

Glass can be easily cold-worked using lapidary techniques. Drilling holes or machining openings can be done with diamond coated tooling. However, I would probably use a laser to modify the blank. Germany has a strong glass heritage. Reichenbach, Kugler and Schott come quickly to mind.

Whatever path is taken, the total project cost has to be amortized over few products.
Additionally, the watch company has to buy stock to hold as spares for future replacements. There is a cost to carry inventory. So, how many spares should ALS have for one watch? 2? 6?
Risk? When ALS gets an aventurine dial watch to service, they burden the risk of damaging the dial during dis-assembly, cleaning and assembly.
In the end, the consumer has to pay the price to play. After all, Richemont is a "for profit" business. -John

There is some greater risk, although with ALS, the servicing is done so well that you don't have to worry too much. Especially if you live in the USA, Mr. Alkis is top notch!
I don't know how many spare dials ALS has, but they will generally have a set number of around 0.2 per watch made, up to 200 pieces. So even if they make 100,000 watches with aventurine dials, they'd probably have a max of 200 spare dials. They don't want to keep a large inventory of spare dials as this is very costly. Dials are amongst the three most expensive units of a watch (movement, case, then dial) so the cost is not trivial and they don't want a large amount of money sitting there with low ROI.

It makes it more interesting to me that you enjoyed reading it! I can't cook very well (the pasta can go from undercooked to overcooked in about 60 seconds, it's hard to get pasta perfectly al dente), but when people enjoy my very mediocre cooking, it makes me happy! And when you read my post, I really appreciate it!

agreed it depends on the piece and not about if it is "worth it" since it is artificial. How it is applied and whether the outcome is attractive to a potential buyer.
