Horological Meandering

I just heard that question in my head and thought why not ask? Obviously, Daniels, Roger Smith, but now Frodsham? (whatever you think, hold on). Are watches that once felt only the the birthright of Swiss Watchmaking... if you will, has this birthright been somehow transferred--currently--to the British--who seem to be creating watches that are not only extraordinary, but exquisitely personal? There are others out there, but now with Frodsham (call me out if I drank the Kool Aid) , there may be a Zeitgeist.  I'll throw it to you.

(ie Rolex) then implementing things that make this brand move elsewhere because it costs too much to do business in Britain. What makes the Swiss and Japanese amazing at it and an example for the rest is that they support their industries and make consistent watches with not a lot of shake up in the industry. Then again we as consumers are blinded a lot by watchmaking as we buy whatever they end up selling up, could you imagine the car industry making a Honda Civic in 1970 then tweaking its looks to keep up with the times, keeping the same engine and performance and getting away with that in 2018? Yet the Swiss do that to us daily, automatics have only recently started to better their performance, COSC hasn't changed their standards much since the 70s and only recently have we been glad at upgrades to timekeeping standards. If British watchmaking gives the customer something unique that we haven't had before and are passionate in their approach and they get supported it will surely be back to better times. 

They are in process with 5 initial bespoke watches using this movement, sponsored by 5 local patrons who understand that there will be a "shakedown" process with it.

After that...Sham will buy one, the magic divination tells me this!

I have a strange feeling that any Struthers watch will be too large for me!! I did see them years ago at Salon QP when they had a joint venture with the Morgan Motor Company. Nice people as almost all small watch makers are. I did like the Frodsham immensely particularly the owners of the company who seem passionate about their brand and had their roots fixed. I like brands like Smith and Frodsham who you know for sure after speaking to them that they will always be based in the UK, they will always make watches their own way and who adopt a no compromise attitude. They make watches the traditional English way and do not even try to compete with the Swiss. They do not really observe market trends and focus on what they do best - producing the best quality watches available taking their time in the old traditional way. For this I salute them.

I assume you are referring to Struthers here and not Frodsham because if Frodsham's can make a 38mm watch, I will rush them a deposit!!

When Frodsham has only a single gear train to contend with, I'll bet it'll be different.
But yes, Struthers does bespoke. They kindly refused my bespoke offer because they are currently focused on getting their first set of the new movement up and going.

I must give credit to Kari Voutilainen for being the most obliging even when it comes to the case size of the Vingt 8 which he can do at 37mm instead of 39mm. Yes, yes, it is one of my wet dreams!!

I have always found Kari's gold cases a bit on the heavy side (yes I know, I need to start lifting weights!! ) and then last year at Salon QP in London,I had the opportunity to try on his new titanium case and I smiled knowingly at him and told him, ' finally Kari, a Voutilainen that I can wear and would be happy to own!!'  A Voutilainen will always remain on my most wanted list together with a handful of other watches.

Fine and good watch maker/brand need not necessary come from Swiss anymore. They can come from England to China, even my country. Ie Singapore or anywhere for the matter of facts.
