at the moment......
.......Patek 3448, Rolex 1665, Rolex 6239....but it probably depends on what day you ask.
Currently, two practical watches......

My preference would be :-)
1. The Patek Philippe 5270R. THE Patek watch in my opinion. There are many more complicated pieces but the vintage colour on the dial,the movement, the case and the lugs gives this watch the X factor.
2. Roger Smith series 2 in rose gold in 38mm - now only produced in 40mm, the previous 38mm version had no peers in my opinion. A little on the thick side but other than that the eptiome of craftsmanship.
3. The Lange 1815 up and down in rose gold (older model) as at 35.9mm it suits my wrist better than the current model of 39mm. Lovely patina on the dial. Whereas the other two watches may be worn only for special occasions, this would be and actually is my daily wear.

I would choose a Nautilus (any Nautilus), a Datograph Up/Down and a Rolex GMT or Yachtmaster (the Everose Oysterflex for me).

I could put together a 'dream' list of practical watches.. ie. well beyond my reach and say
1. Sport Watch - RM027
2. Daily Wear - Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual
3. Dress Watch - Patek 5078
My realistic practical list however, would be my current rota:
1. Sport Watch - '87 Pepsi GMT
2. Daily Wear - Langematik Perpetual
3. Dress Watch - Richard Lange
I could swap out the perpetual for a Datograph, but the stealthiness of the pt perpetual makes it such an easy piece to reach for each morning.

I think the task is impossible, for me anyway.
If, somehow, I reduced what I have to 3 watches, I would quickly add a fourth, and a fifth...
Forced, I would say 2 Langes and a steel watch on bracelet-say the 1815 RPC; Datograph and a Yachtmaster or Explorer II.

Iam like you but since yesterday I have been questioning myself .
Then I say to myself a double split Lange , daydate pt rolex and a Patek 5204p....lol or a 5204p, submariner and a Lange zeitwerk ....
What do you mean by practical? Tool?
In this case: One Chrono, one GMT, one Alarm.
The Alarm? I can hit two birds with the same stone, with the U.N Sonata, which is an alarm and a GMT.
The Chrono? I think the Duometre, closely followed by the Montblanc 1858 Tachymeter.
If I pick the Sonata, then I have an extra ball to play, and I would go for a Minute Repeater. JLC for example.

... Our shared passion. That said, I'm going with my JLC AMVOX II, a Ulysse Nardin Maxi Marine Diver, and a Rolex GMT. The real question is, if you could only have ONE watch, which watch would it be?

I thought a lot...
- Patek 5960A because it is practical (and great)
- Patek 5100P as a dress watch because of the design and movement
- Rolex Submariner (50 years green bezel) because Sub is great and I dive
I thought about all fancy alternatives including perpetuals, split-second, WT and MR. But in reality these three would do it all. If the list should be all Patek, I would replace the Submariner with 5164A.
