And Nico have provided a great answer! You can't go wrong with either one.
I might just list the difference in features for each side (some info taken from Kari's web site)... as what's more important is purely personal preference
Observatoire
- is what "made" Kari
- Peseux observatory standard movement with historical significance
- limited edition
- 38mm x 10.5mm
- standard with deployant
- platinum timing screws in balance
- engine turned gold dial
- likely cost less than a Vingt-8
- no wait list (when you see one on the market)
Vingt 8
- is Kari's first in-house
- Vingt 8 double escape movement is innovative
- limited production
- 39mm x 11.5mm
- standard with pin buckle (even though a little more consistent in design)
- rose gold timing weights in balance
- engine turned silver dial
- main plates and bridges in german silver
- wheels in rose gold
- long wait list (by now)
- customisable (the Observatoire is also customisable when ordered, but as it's all accounted for, you'll be looking at a pre-owned one that the previous owner have decided on the specifications, whereas with a Vingt 8, you decide the details with guilloche, markers, colours etc).
At the end of the day, the dial design have changed a little so the aesthetics might be a major factor in choice. I personally prefer the layout of the Vingt 8 slightly more, and the comparison between the 2 movements doesn't bother me too much. Also being able to work personally with Kari on the details of the watch was a big factor for me preferring the Vingt 8. I haven't seen either watches in the metal, so I won't comment on the perceived finishing quality between the two. I'll let others that's seen them in person comment on this aspect.
