What are you wearing today?

For me today it is the retrograding calendar watch. Why? Becasue I'm
contemplating making a bid on Lot 15 at the upcoming Antiquorum auction and I
want to see if I want this watch's big brother. :-)

I feel almost out of place. Not only am I not wearing something rose gold, but I'm not wearing a Vacheron.  Sorry guys I'm wearing the same steel and platinum Pasha from last week's pictures.  I'm still working on getting a good macro shot of the movement for Jian.

Not sure which lot it is but I really like the wg skeleton VC thats up for auction.

If I'm allowed to make a wild guess, I'd adventure  to say that, of the model you have in your hands, there was possibly less than a dozen produced.

And, after all, how many have survived all these 70 years?

and year of your vintage?

the watch is 35mm without the crown, and with the bezel being rather narrow, it looks quite large for a vintage Patek. It is a ref. 1578, with the classic (handwind) cal. 27SC.

Given the movement number, it was produced between 1955 and 1960, though I won't know the exact year until I receive an archive extract.

It's a lovely beauty what you got,. I also like the detailed seconds divisions forming the out ring on the dial, which is a beautiful contrast with the cleaness of the dial center.

That outer ring which you mention is one of the features which originally drew me to the watch. And along with what you mentioned, I like the contrast of the black print with the gold markers, and it goes particularly well with the blued second hand (which is now closer to black because of age).

While there are, of course, many features of a given watch which contribute to my interest and, ultimately, to my acquisition of the watch, dial design is probably the most important. No matter how fine a particular watch may be, no matter how good and/or important the movement may be, if I am not very attracted to the dial, then it won't find its way into my small collection.

Maybe you won't know until you get the extract from the archives. In any event, that watch is very nice and I love leaf hands.

I do believe that the leaf hands are original. I have seen them on some other ref. 1578 models, and their apparent aging matches the rest of the watch. The blued second hand is also original, and I was told by a Henri Stern (NY) representative that the model was originally made with both blued and gold second hands.

He also told me, interestingly, that when such a watch is sent to Switzerland for service (as mine will be shortly), they will replace the hands if they are "too tarnished", as apparently the tarnishing process can produce debris which can, in turn, foul the movement.
