Decided to try out some infra-red landscapes on the Leica Q which is my current go to camera. I love the 28mm Summilux lens and its almost a do it all camera for what I shoot. In the realm of things for Leica, this camera to me is value for money. I know its all relative to the amount spend on a single lens camera, but in Leica scheme of things, for a Leica Q, you effectively pay for an amazing 28mm Summilux and get a camera thrown in for free.

But I reckon that it may well work though the exposures and settings will probably need to be tweaked to find the working combination for the M240

IR is quite fun as it gives a surreal field to foilage and landscape. Does not work on all subjects though

Back in 2014 I did some IR tests with Ilford SFX 200, a B&W film that has extended red sensitivity (up to 740nm) together with a R72 Infrared Filter.  I was using my Nikon F3P and the AIS 50mm f/1.2...  The question was how to determine the exposure...

The R72 filter doesn't have a fixed filter factor and the results depend largely on the ISO sensitivity in use and lighting conditions, bracketing is recommended.  I found that when using Ilford SFX 200 and R72 filter good results could be had using the following guidance as a starting point (note the camera was set for ISO 200):

01: in shaded sunny conditions meter at ISO 3 i.e. 6 steps / FFactor of 64
02: in bright direct sunshine meter at ISO 12 i.e. 4 steps / FFactor of 16

At that time I did try with a digital camera, but with poor result (Canon 5DII).  I understand that a lot depends on which camera you are using.  FYI: Rock Kenwell has a write up on how to "simulate / enhance" the IR effect in post processing...

How did you determine the exposure?

in figuring out which exposure timing will give the best result. On the Leica Q, I tried not to extend the exposure too long as you will risk the foilage getting blurred with movements from the wind etc. So I try to have an exposure less than 8 seconds and play around with ISO and aperture to get the right exposure. Also ISO for digital Infra Red, I will try to limit going above ISO 800 as you will get other digital artifacts coming in especially coupled with longer exposure timings.
Still playing around to get the hang of it.

I have to give it a try on digital... I enjoy a bit of IR ; )

Edit: manual focus?  Did you have to adjust the distance for IR?

I basically used manual hyperfocal zone focusing based on f8 aperture so that it gives me maximum depth of field set at f8. Funny thing is that the Leica Q even though with the R72 IR filter on it is still able to auto focus when you set the shutter speed to +1 mode and pressed and hold the shutter. I was really quite impressed that it can auto focus with the IR filter.

When I was using the R72 I could not focus through the filter... too dark. I was focusing at near infinity so even though there was an IR focus adjustment indicator on the lens I don't remember it as being that critical. Got to love the Leica Q
