3940 or 5140
Im choosing between a 3940 or 5140. I want a perpetual calendar and a self winding patek. My wrist size is 7.5. Would you choose a 3940 or 5140? Thanks.
Very little difference...
in the size. The case of 3940 is 36 mm and 5140 37.2 mm. The movements are just the same, the bezels a bit different and the dials are also a bit different.
I like the dial of 3940 more but I still have 5140. The reason is that the platinum version of 5140 is having a very unique blue dial. If speaking about yellow gold, red gold or white gold, I would rather take 3940.
But this is purely a matter of taste. You need to decide which one you like more. My wrist is 8 inches and I'm happy with the size of both perpetual versions.

May I suggest...
you going down to your AD and try both of them on your wrist. See it in real life, in the different metals and then buy what you like. As Kari said, they are basically the same but you are the one that will have to wear ~ that will have the privilege of ~ wearing it.

If you have not already, I would suggest you have a look at one of the recent forum threads that focus on the dial differences between the 3940 and the 5140. Some fair points made on the differences between the two models.
I recently went the through the choosing process (possibly the best part in the process) and ended up with a 5140G. My wrist measures 7.5 and I do enjoy the extra 1.2mm and personally not bothered the slightest by the criticism surrounding the dial. I enjoy the contemporary and fresh feel of the dial on the 5140 and would make the same choice any day if I had to do it over.
However this is just me. In the end you have to go with what you feel is right and wait until you feel certain it is the right decision. Only you know what is right for you. Good luck!

5140 works for me only in platinum version with amazing navy blue dial...
i dont like appearnce of the numbers and letters - bit messy for me. I tried to convince the opposite to myself but these big sized letters and numbers just out of my taste. As well as the smashed dates on 5140
I am hunting for brand new old stock 3940G - its epitome of Patek. One of.
Just my opinion.
3940 gets my vote
initially undecided and it was tempting with the slightly bigger 5140. Bests to have them on your wrist so you get the 'feel' and that should help your decision making. All the best !

....the sub-dials just have a much better balance in my view.... I am growing to love the 3940..... very much.

Sorry: This is meant to respond to the MAIN post, not to the individual responder.
36 mm 3940 looks too small on a 7.5" wrist (mine).
In contrast the 37 mm 5140 looks perfect as a daily wear.
The additional 1 mm makes a huge difference visually.
I do not like large diameter watches. 38 mm is max for me.
Thus, for example 5130 being 39+mm is too big for my taste.
For some reason there are few in the PP community that continually trash 5140.
Comments vary: Crowded dial, numbers squashed, not balanced, 3940 is way better etc.
I was almost persuaded to go for 3940 by reading these comments.
Until I tried both 3940G and 5140G on my wrist at the same time.
I ended up with 5140G, no question about it. The 3940G looks tiny.
Please try both on, side-by-side, then decide.
FYI: If you are interested in 3940P,there will be no crystal back - only metal.
If you like 3940G, they are all rhodium plated.
Are you sure about "rhodium played"?
As for me it's huge argument AGAINST 3940G.

I am pretty sure
that Patek used rhodium platting on all their WG models until 2008 or so, thus all 3940G must be rhodium plated. However, it does not cost much to re-plate and Patek does it.
