Golf anyone?
Recently on another thread it was mentioned that golfing while wearing a Patek might not be such a good idea. A forum member who also happens to be a former Patek AD and who brings decades of professional experience in the world of high-end jewelry and timepieces brought this to my attention and I have a high regard for his opinion.
I try to avoid abusing my watches and am always mindful of the recommended levels of water resistance, and avoid magnetic field exposure, as well as activities that might reasonably be expected to inflict unnecessary damage. At my age and lifestyle I'm well beyond the sports watch phase, and tend toward more refined simple dress watch. Golf remains an activity that I partake, and never have given a second thought to the patek on my left wrist. Now I'm rethinking the wisdom of the strategy.
My philosophy has always been to use and enjoy my timepieces and save the room in the safe for stock certificates and bullion. Many of modern watch owners seem to have become obsessed with papers, boxes, dings, and scratches that seem not to have been such an issue in days gone by. With that caveat, like most of you I've worked hard to have the opportunity to own a nice watch and its never my intent to subject it to activities innappropriate or inconsistent with its design.
My question for any forum members who share a passion for golfing is whether or not you have experienced any associated watch related problems? Or do you subscribe to the admonishment and leave your watch at home?

I wear all my watches , but i dont think a patek could stand the shock of a golf swing. Keep it at home and buy a casio. Or if you have to, get the RM bubba watson, that watch IS made for golf.

I heard the same
and the vibrations coming back to the wrist are quite significant.
Same thing for Mountain bike riding for example.
What about bowling and jogging ?
This thread is getting informative in all the dos and donts regarding watch care.
I don't wear the Patek on the bowling arm but a precaution is a precaution. I almost wore one for a jog. The drizzle kept me away from my decision.

I am a keen golfer and 2 years ago one of the diamonds (at 11 index) fell off. Sent it to Rolex and had a service as well.
I wore that Rolex all the time, everyday for 5 years. Now I wear a Seiko day date for golf 
My golfing buddy...
Wears a Rolex DJ for golfing and now he wears a Sub C LN while golfing.
He brought it to RSC once for the annual maintenance of his DJ. No issue was found on the said watch.
I personally don't wear watch for golfing anymore, after a sore wrist incident 5 years ago.
I rather keep my Patek inside my car or my locker when I go golfing and bring it out for wearing after shower.

I have never worn a watch for any sport
and I don;t see the need for it unless I'm paid to wear it like Phil or Bubba. It serves no purpose for a professional or social golfer during the round.

Instead, ... wear a Garmin GPS watch. You'll be able to get distances to the Front, Back and Center of the green. A nice adjunct would be the keep a pouch that has several lined compartments to keep you Watch and Wedding Ring protected in your golf bag.

Most watches are tested for a certain amount of "impact" resistance. I bought one specific watch as it has been tested to a very high level. If i am doing anything that will require possible impact, I select that watch. It is quite surprising how much so-called impact occurs on a daily basis. It is quite high. Most watches are tested to cope with a certain amount of impact, but sport is another issue. And specifically, golf has quite a high level of impact. I would be very very surprised if the impact measurement for a golf swing was inside the standard resistance levels tested for a Patek. To be honest, I would be surprised if many high-end watches would pass that test

Appreciate all of your insights. I just seems odd that so many high end watches are advertised with the golfing lifestyle, the association implied but never directly addressed, I suppose.
Were it not for this forum I doubt I would ever have given it a second thought. The idea of leaving an expensive watch in the car or locker has never appealed to me, I don't think I'd even be comfortable leaving my wallet - and these are some rather exclusive surroundings. All the more reason not to leave them unattended- remember "Sutton's rule".
To address another point, why do I even need the watch while golfing? Simple answer is that golf often transitions to lunch and/or meetings at the club and in that setting I feel someone naked with a bare wrist. I suppose I could wear a Casio as some have suggested, but then what was the reason I bought a nice watch in the first place?
So just to summarize, is it the group consensus that no high end watch should be worn golfing unless specifically designated for such activity? No rolex, VC, patek etc? Is a hand wound movement less susceptible to injury?
Seems to me these watch companies have profited from the association with golf (which honestly for me has always been more a social activity then a true "sport") and perhaps should address the suitability of their timepieces either in their marketing or in their design.

Hi Sam,
As golfers, I think we've all felt the pain or shock that comes with an off center strike and how it immediately rides up your arm towards your elbow. I can only imagine what that could do to the very precise movement of a valuable timepiece.
May I suggest a valuables pouch? Most golf equipment manufacturers sell them and they are just a small price to pay to keep your watch shock and scratch free while you enjoy your round of golf.

Interesting thread and I wanted to chime in; this past spring I golfed with a gentleman collector I met while being a patron in Augusta. He wore a lovely Nautilus 5980 throughout the round and I commented on it being affected by the inertia of the swing. His rationale was simply that the Nautilus was meant to be worn and he had not experienced any issues with timing due to excessive force. I can't say I personally agree, but then again it wasn't my wrist 
I personally prefer my Garmin S3 GPS watch for golf, and my Langes for dinner afterward.

In fact, I couldn't answer your question because I never wear a watch at my wrist while golfing. And never tried too. I don't want to take any risk. Even more : the same for playing tennis.
On the other end, I wear a watch while skiing or swimming. Or playing chess ;-)))
