Hi Folks,

As a big fan of PP and owing several pieces including 5970p,5070 and etc.If you are given a chance to own a 5170J,what would your be your opinion?Grab it or leave it?

the advanced design of the movement makes me want to buy it but I do not like the Roman Numerals on the dial much so I am inclined to decline on this one.  The 5970 and 5070 have a lot more character IMHO.

the Heart scale surprised me as at 25b/mn, you are in emergency unit so this original scale does not fit me.

the human pulse: Normal pulse at rest is around 50-60b/min.

When you are in activity or when you make some sport, the pulse increase so it is important to follow it and to know if you are not at cardiac risk: Max is 220 minus age in years. For ex at 50 y.o maximum pulse allowed is 220- 50=170b/min

If you have a large heart and you are very well trained (like champion) your heart could be at lower rate at rest=40b/min

Below 40b/min: it is quite a non sense for us....

So, the usual scale used for pulsometre is calculated for 30pulses and range from 60b/min (even 40) to higher than 200b/min.
Never below 40b/min as on this scale which is enlarged on the dial for 15pulses.

Certainly a beautiful movement. But I have to say that in regard to tactile feel of winding and pushers (very important to me in a high end manual chrono), it fell short compared to some other great chronos, namely the Datograph and 5070 (especially the former). Also as I understand no fly-back function on this chrono (correct me if I am wrong). Psychologically nice to have an in-house manual chrono, but so far I am not as impressed as expected.

The 5170 has disappointed also to me. The rear view is most beautiful in 5070. And the feel of the buttons is different. Not bad, but better 5070.

If you can afford one of each ... why not ?

Anyway, I would. I would probably want the 4 different 5070's but if there was money left for a fifth one I would definitely buy a 5170 too !

I have not been a huge fan of the 5070/5170, especially at that price point. Just really doesn't do much for me. Yes a very nice watch by a superb company but for that amount of money, I would look at other models!!

As you already own the 5070 and its perpetual sister, why not getting this 5170?

If you love it, I don't see the reason why you should not get it.

The colored gold?

In this case, wait for next year or 2012, it may soon come in white metal.

If you don't like it, then the answer is easy.

Left me a bit cold when I handled one......I also much prefer the 5070..........
When I handled the 5170J I also handled the 5396Rg with the new dial and for me that was the one to have between the two........
However I do see the charm of the 5170J and will look forward to seeing it in other colours....

I really like the 5170's in-house mvt, but the two registers appear to be way too small for the large dial.  Whereas on the 5070, the registers are better proportioned.  JMHO

Personally I am not a great fan of it, nor of the roman numerals.....

However, I think that it is a very interesting watch....

A new movement and a very wearable size......

I have not seen it in metal yet, and many times a picture does not tell the whole truth....

At the end of the day, if you like it on your wrist then go for it.....

a diversified collection, there are other pieces to consider.

If money isn't an object, get it.  If you have to be selective, then that's a different story.

Remember  there will be a replacement for the 5970 and maybe some more interesting pieces.

sure, why not we can hope can't we!

But I prefer the 5170 to the 5070.  I realy am drawn to its classic styling.  I must include the substantial caveat that I have not seen the 5170 in the metal yet, but barring any unforeseen change of heart when it's on my wrist, I will have one someday.

Not sure about the YG, though - I may wait to see the other metals.

Unfortunately it's not the movement, that you look at to tell the time. But the dial which just leaves me cold. I am not a fan of Roman Numerals and the font for the dials is also not to my liking......................Sorry just my personal thoughts

since u have the 5970 and the 5070 . u shouldn't be taking it!  Personally I think the 5070 is a nicer piece. Just my two cents worth.

Looking from the feedbacks/respond,i would say more are against then taking it.

But i have decided to try it personnally before i make the final decision.....just like the old saying--let's see if he talks to me..LOLOLOLO.
