I remember driving the 2.8 FWD Passat back in the 90ies and there was loads of torque steer while accelerating, decent FWD 'sports' cars have lots of solutions for this problem.
One was used by the Nissan Primera and the Ford Focus RS, as well as the Megane and Clio RS, called the Perfohub.

1. A really good suspension set-up
2. Sometimes a limited slip differential (I have one on the Clio now)
3. Decent tires like the Michelin Pilot Sports
4. Lightweight wheels
... makes sure these cars have nothing to do with the average (even with 200 hp plus) mainstream cars, the levels of grip and accelerating straightforward or out of a corner is astonishing.
A Golf GTI might not have that Perfohub system but it sure is waaaaaays better than the Mercedes.
