It was very confusing!
This describes Lange's then-new sales model in 2021, in detail.
Many of us were conflating "pre-sale" pieces like the ZW and Datograph (which never required any prior purchase) with "application" pieces like the steel Odysseus Datomatic (which required a prior purchase).
There were basically 3 categories of watches in that 2021 sales model:
- Regular, stock inventory pieces. These were watches that Lange would provide to ADs/boutiques to keep in inventory for off-the-shelf purchases. They included the standard Lange 1, 1815, Richard Lange, and Saxonia models, etc.
- Pre-Sale Pieces. These were watches that Lange would NOT ordinarily provide to ADs/boutiques to keep in inventory for off-the-shelf purchase. Customers had to order pre-sale pieces, which required no prior purchase. They included the ZW, Datograph, RL Jumping Seconds, WG Odysseus, etc. That was the big change that caused the confusion and rumors. Specifically, people mistakenly thought that just because points of sale would no longer carry these pieces in their inventory, that meant they now required a prior purchase. But that was never true.
- Application Pieces. These were bundled and required prior purchases. They included the steel Odysseus Datomatic and most limited edition Langes.
Since that time, Lange closed all remaining US ADs, and we also now see more of those "pre-sale" pieces (Zeitwerks, etc.) in inventory in boutiques. So I'm not sure that the "Pre-Sale Pieces" concept is still relevant.
