Breguet

Hi all this is my first Breguet post.

I have recently graduated from university and luckily my parents are willing to buy me a watch within a certain budget. I was recently at a wedding and the only watch brand I could see was either AP or Hublot. In my own opinion neither of the brands compare to Breguet.

Now being 22 years of age I do prefer oversized watches and this particular watch was brought to my attention. Please follow the link below directly from the Breguet website: www.breguet.com V

Problem is that I have seen live pictures of the watch posted by members and the two show no resemblance. Any advice or info would be much appreciated as it will be my first true watch.

Hi Medhi,

You asked for advice.... My advice is as follows, and for the following reasons.

Firstly, if you buy a Breguet and it breaks down, and it is your only good watch... then on Breguet's current service and repair history, you need to be prepared to send it away for many, many months waiting for a fix.

Secondly, if you are 22, then you are young, and if you are young, you probably lead an active life.

If I were 22 again, and know what I know now, I would buy a Rolex, as you can be sure it will still be working when you have a son who is 22.

The Breguet marines have not been around as long as Rolex marine models... and in my opinion have not established a reputation for ruggedness.

I have two Breguets, one is a marine, Both are back in Switzerland getting warranty repair work done.

Also I have two Rolex watches in my collection of working watches.... the Rolexes have never given any trouble and I recently gave one Gold Rolex to my son.... I had worn that watch for around 15 to 18 years with no problems and used it as a daily wearer doing hard work. I might add that my Rolex are yellow gold, and when you get a Rolex serviced, they restore the Gold finish to like new. My wife also has many watches but chooses to wear he Rolex as a daily wearer.

I have found that 'You cant kill a Rolex', and if your parents are buying you a present for such a special occasion, then it needs to give you trouble free, and many long years of happy and reliable use.... otherwise it will be a disappointment to all.

A lot of my friends own rolex's and AP ROO thats why I wanted to be a bit different. But then again I would rather own a watch that did not require such high maintenance. Will keep you posted on my decision. Thanks for your help.

Rolexes are great and I own one for 15 years and sold it for more than I bought it in excellent working condition. Now if you want to be a little bit different take a look to the Royal Oak offshore series. This being said I have two Breguet and they work perfectly.

I can relate to you incredibly well.  I am also 22, and a recent college grad.  My parents were generous enough to give me a watch as a gift, and I elected to get a Type XX Transatlantique, for many of the same reasons you listed.  I, too, know plenty of people with Rolex's, Panerai, Hublot, etc.,  Not to demean those brands, but they were not for me.  I enjoy people asking about my watch, and I enjoy explaining some of the history and prestige associated with the brand.  Needless to say, I am very pleased with my decision, and recommend you go and try a lot of brands/models.  I was fortunate enough to visit many fine ADs and Boutiques before I made my decision, so I knew without question that it was the right choice for me.  

Whatever you decide, wear it and enjoy it in good health.

Which marine model is that? The designation on the dial doesn't appear to match anything in Breguet's current catalog.

I am pretty sure this model Breguet Marine 5817 "Big Date" in SS is still in the current line up but if not is should be easy to get through most AD's.

This is a super watch sporty and dressy at about 39mm on the dial but the big lugs and awesome strap give it a much bigger look.  I wear a lot of 42 -44mm watches and this one feels as big but isn't.
