Thank you for a thought prevoking post! I've never really liked the idea of a flightmaster on leather other than the OEM rally style that it came on as an option back in the day i.e. the one shown here:
To be frank I don't really care for these OEM rallys from that period much, they are too thin and the texture is not quite right but I had always sort of accepted them as "period appropreate". The modern selection of perforated rally straps on the market are much thicker in construction and nicer IMO.
Contrary to other's experience I find the old Omega 'hairpuller' bracelets comfortable despite my big hairy wrists. I've always worn my flightmaster on its original bracelet and think it looks great that way. But Andrew got me thinking about what straps might suit a flightmaster. So today I pulled out a grey leather NATO I bought in anticipation of putting it on a vintage Rolex and gave it a try on the flightmaster.
Here's another angle:
And a couple of wrist shots:
And closer:
Anyway while I probably will never wear it this way I think it gives a tool watch quality that you could imagine a military pilot chosing as an option.
To finish off ... Andrew if you want to try options other than the thick black strap you have on at the moment perhaps a modern 22mm rally strap with an OEM Omega buckle might give you a period appropriate vibe but with modern quality and updated style. Just food for thought.
Regards and thanks for viewing,
Zac
