My first Panerai, ref. 338 Titanium

Oct 16, 2013,09:08 AM

I had never really considered owning a Panerai, given my smallish (6.75") wrist size and the preponderance of the brand's watches over 42mm, not to mention that I am primarily a vintage collector. However, in Firenze last week I stumbled across the Officine Panerai boutique (currently being enlarged, it looks like) across from the Duomo, and fell in love with a couple of the 42mm rose gold models (Radiomir ref. 439 and Radiomir 1940 ref. 513). Back state-side this past weekend, in Boca Raton, I visited the boutique there and discovered the 338 -- and immediately wanted one! It seemed the perfect compromise, elegant yet sporty (much moreso than the gold models), and very lightweight and comfortable on the wrist.

Well, it's now home with me on my wrist. The dealer had a beautiful honey matte alligator strap that he threw in; I much prefer it to the black alligator with white stitching that comes with the watch.

Your PAM338 looks great on your wrist. Hopefully this is the 1st Panerai of many to come in the future! And btw, welcome to PuristSPro! Cheers, Anthony

A fine first choice

The strap is nubuck, according to the AD, so you appear to be correct that it's a JV. Would it be genuine croc or alligator, despite not being marked as such? Sure looks like it is. It is only marked Officine Panerai and cucito a mano. By the way, this 25...

And I think your JV strap is actually the proper size! Mine is a mm or two too wide, but it fits (barely).

I have...Daddy :-)

I have had my 338 before and I chose the exact same strap of yours...it is the famous nubuck strap that you don't find in other brands. Agree with all the merits you stated but over time I move onto something bigger. Joseph
